Electrode cleaning from gel

Is there a video that explains how to properly clean the electrodes after using the gel?
Can the ends of the electrodes be washed with soap and water or at least only with water?

Thanks in advance.

  • Dear @wjcroft do you have any idea?
    Thanks in advance.

Are you asking about the electrode cap? Have you tried emailing contact @ openbci.com ? I don't have one of these caps here, but I would have expected it to come with maintenance instructions. If the cap has sintered electrodes, then extra care is needed.

    Dear @wjcroft,

Yes I m asking about the electrode cap.
You mean if has coated electrodes, then extra care is needed right? Not sintered
I cant find something else except of the following instructions:

    Important Notes:

Electrode gel is required and sold separately. Purchase the recommended product HERE.
Cleaning the cap properly after use is very important and will substantially increase the longevity of the product. A brush for cleaning the cap is included!
The premium electrode cap with sintered AgAgCl electrodes is resistant to the corrosion of wet electrodes associated with repeated use. The sintered material is conductive throughout; a layer can be scraped off in the event of corrosion, restoring the signal quality. The sintered cap is longer-lasting and more durable. This cap has gray plastic guards around the electrodes (see product images).
It has been well-established by that sintered Ag-AgCl electrodes are superior to other types of commercially available electrodes, as compared here and here in Clinical Neurophysiology.
After 25-50 uses, corrosion of coated Ag/AgCl electrodes may require replacement of the cap if not maintained by cleaning, due to compromised conductive layer. This cap has black rubber guards around the electrodes (see product images)
Be sure to choose your size from the dropdown menu! See instructions below.

Is it good enough just a brush cleaning or needed water?
Water may result problem in the quality in the future?

    Please let me know.

I still recommend you ask contact at openbci.com, for some more detailed cleaning instructions. Mentioning @Shirley.

I know that when I have used the Electro-cap's in the past, there are numerous online instructions on how to clean. Such as:

    https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+clean+eeg+electro-cap

I also know that sintered electrodes require more care, and even plated silver chloride electrode caps, may be more subject to abrasion damage. The instructions at the above Google search may not apply to the OpenBCI cap. My impression is that the
instruction clip you gave above, is very minimal as far as what I have seen in Electro-cap material.

    See this related thread:

    https://openbci.com/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/2274/washing-openbci-sintered-cap

My reading of care instructions for sintered electrodes is a mixed bag. Some site say these are subject to contamination and recommend various processes involving distilled water. See above thread. Another typical page on sintered care:

  • Perfect.
Thank you so much @Shirley and @wjcroft
