Getting Started

Hello everyone. My university engineering team is working on an OpenBCI based project. We bought a new pic32mx250f128b MCU and successfully uploaded test code with Arduino IDE. For the next step we want to run the OpenBCI software and GUI on the MCU, but we are not sure how to get started. What are the next steps from here? Any resources to provide us? Thanks.

Thanks for the response wjcroft! We have actually been through the OpenBCI hardware documentations, but I was speaking more towards getting their software to run on our breadboard setup around the MCU. Anything more specific?

There are various posts in this category, Build-it-yourself, regarding installing the bootloader and such. Do you have all the other connections to peripheral chips, emulating the Cyton: ADS1299, RFduinos, etc.? RFduino is at end of life, no longer stocked by distributors.

After doing more investigation, we believe we have a chipKit USB boot loader pre-programmed onto the device: TCHIP-USB-MX250F128B (http://www.microchipdirect.com/ProductSearch.aspx?Keywords=TCHIP-USB-MX250F128B). We also believe we were able to upload the DefaultBoard sketch through Arduino successfully, but cannot really verify this until we are able to connect to the OpenBCI through bluetooth.

Are we doing something incorrect at this point? There is still a lot of ambiguity.

Also, we intend on experimenting with using the internal ADC on the PIC32 instead of the ADS1299.

How do you intend to "connect to the OpenBCI through bluetooth"? Do you have the RFduinos (dongle and mainboard)? You cannot use the PIC ADC, it is not capable of sensing EEG signals, which are in the approximate range of 1 to 80 microvolts. The ADC1299 is what enables reception of microvolt level signals.

It is possible to setup a build-it-yourself Cyton-like system, without the RFduinos. (Instead using a USB serial port.) Look over some of the recent posts in this category for tips.
