Myoware, measuring muscle fatigue - asking for hardware advice

Hello,

I'm Phd student and I'm searching for measuring in real time muscle fatigue during mid-air interaction gestures.
For this purpose I would like to use wireless surface EMG.

I wonder if using some myoware with cyton or ganglion could fit in this case.
I'll need 3 sEMG by arm (6 in total).
So I would like to know if and how I could use your hardware.

Thanks in advance.

    Vincent, hi.

It sounds like you are monitoring only 3 muscles (3 pairs of electrodes = 6 foam electrodes).

What the Myoware is capable of doing is rectifying and integrating the raw EMG signal. See the image on page 6 of this document,

Most EMG research works with the raw EMG. Various sample rates are used. Some studies rely on higher rates such as 500 or 1000 Hz. But much useful information can be gathered at lower rates like 250 or 200 Hz.

The Cyton is capable of gathering the raw EMG by itself, allowing you to decide how you want to signal process it, integrate it, etc.

The Ganglion, because of the compression algorithm it uses, I don't believe can record the raw EMG accurately. Because the waveform is changing so fast and with such magnitude (spikes), that the compression algorithm (designed for slower moving EEG), cannot keep up. That is where the Myoware would come in. The Myoware has two outputs, as shown in the diagram. One raw, and the other rectified and integrated. Ganglion would be able to read this integrated signal just fine.

So it is up to you how you want to setup the hardware, either with Cyton (Myoware not needed), or with Ganglion and 3 Myowares.

    Regards,

    William

If instead you are measuring 3 muscles, PER ARM, then of course you would go with the Cyton. Using 6 channels total.

Note also that both Ganglion and Cyton are capable of running at higher sample rates such as 400 or 500 Hz, with the Wifi Shield. In this case I believe Ganglion 'may' be able to record raw EMG, provided the (low speed 200 Hz) compression algorithm is not engaged. I'm going to mention AJ @pushtheworld and @techsupport here for clarification.

    Regards,

  • Thank you a lot William,

Yes, what I want is measuring 3 muscles/arm. I will follow your advices and purchase Cyton with Wifi-shield.
