Neurosensing/Neuromodulation used for thoughts/movements/measure pain?
Hi! I have an interest in biotechnology, specifically
neurobiotechnology; I’m curious about how electrical neuroimaging and/or
Brain Computer Interfaces can be used to possibly decode thoughts.
Essentially, I’m looking for information on if a BCI could be used to
measure electrical impulses, or if they can also be used to stimulate
different areas of the body (say, if a person has a spinal injury, could
a BCI send electrical signals to that area to try to stimulate it, or
could neuroimaging capture stimulation attempts?). I’ve read about the
use of cochlear implants, EEGs, EMGs, and other devices and procedures
used to measure emotional reactions to business advertisements, for
example, and I’ve already interviewed an individual from iMotions, a
company that utilizes Eye Tracking, galvanic skin responses, MRIs, and
EEGs to measure brain stimuli. I’m wondering if there are other devices
(invasive? Non-invasive? Control or non-control) that are currently
being researched and/or implemented into recent medical practices and/or
procedures.
In full disclosure, I do have a personal interest in this subject as
well. I’ve been experiencing pain that feels like electrocutions, and
I’m hoping to discover ways in which I can alleviate/diagnose it. I have
felt both a foreign object embedded in my ear and what feels like
something between my nasal cavity/nostrils and the roof of my mouth
(that general area). I've felt those objects constrict and/or pulsate in
time alongside these painful electrocution-like sensations on my brain,
forward, inner nostrils, teeth, and
all over my head and scalp (from back to top, and along the sides).
I’ve also felt instances where I’ve felt
electrocutions at the base of my neck, toes, and fingertips, and I've
experienced intermittent muscle tightness
(as if my firearms and/or hips were being restricted). I've even felt a
burning, electrical clamp-like sensation on the left side of my
forehead (above the left eye), as if there's a brand or sharp pin-like
object being slowly buried into my frontal lobe. It seems to almost
disable the "sound" of my own inner voice, or my own thoughts, at times.
