High speed network switch?

The shop listing for the shield mentions that you need a "high speed network switch" to get sample rates over 2000Hz, what exactly does that mean?

The exact sentence is:
"With a high speed network switch, sample rates over 2000Hz are possible with a theoretical limit of 16000Hz for the Cyton, 8000Hz for the Cyton with Daisy shield, and 12800Hz for the Ganglion."

Mentioning @techsupport. I believe the fastest speeds are available with Wifi Direct, avoiding the packets going through a router.
  • I have tried with Wifi Direct but the sample rate only reaches just around 2000Hz when setting it higher than 1600Hz with Ganglion. I've even tried this in a location where there were no other Wifi signals around.

Hi CJ, thanks for reporting your data rates.

My guess is that the Wifi-Shield page in the Shop could be revised with typical max expected rates, and to downplay the "theoretical limits", because those I think are based on the Cyton or Ganglion ADC maximum sample rates. Instead of considering the practical wireless bandwidth constraints. And the page could be edited to mention Wifi-Direct instead of "high speed network switch", since that is the preferred high speed option.

It sounds like the Wifi-Direct connection you used should be the fastest you can get currently. What kind of rates do you need for your application? What is your application?

    Mentioning AJ @pushtheworld, @Conor, @openbci.

  • Thanks William, I'm curious to know too if there are practical limitations.

I'm working on an EMG project to recognise finger and hand movements. Increasing the sample rate from 200 Hz to 1600 Hz resulted in a significant improvement in accuracy and I'm hypothesising that increasing the sample rate should further improve accuracy.

    Thanks,
    Chris
