Wifi Shield recently not connecting / with external power, GUI can't find it.

Hi,

I have a wifi shield connected to a Cyton board and am using OpenBCI GUI. I have successfully had it working intermittently, but recent have not been able to connect to the software.

Here are my settings:

wifi shield firmware version 2.0.3

Open BCI GUI version 3.3.1 (MacOS)

I have configured the wifi shield to connect to my network.

I'm using the 3.7V 500MAh battery recommended for this setup.

Here is my issue. When I try to connect the wifi shield to the Open GUI software with the external power on the software doesn't find the shield (I also never get past the D2 4 blinks in 2 seconds). However, if I turn off the external power setting in the shield (and therefore turn off the Cyton board), the wifi shield will appear on the search in the Open GUI software (and blink 4 times in 2 seconds followed by 2 blinks in 2 seconds). However, because the Cyton is not turned on it won't connect to the device.

I have tried turning off external power on the wifi shield, searching for it in the software, selecting it, then turning on the external power, but I run into a time-out.

Any idea how to connect the wifi shield to the software while also having the Cyton board on?

TIA

Jeff

    Jeff, hi.

Just confirming, the battery(s) are all fully charged. What do you think changed recently that might correspond to the breakage? You say it was working 'intermittently' previously.

    Mentioning AJ @pushtheworld, Joel @biomurph, @openbci.

Yes, the battery is fully charged. I don't know what changed. I've only had the device for a short period of time and tried using it maybe 5 or 6 times, so I'm still feeling my way around the process. It took a while to configure the wifi and during that process I was able to connect by booting, rebooting, etc. Lately, though, the wifi shield wouldn't appear. After several hours of trying and reconfiguring the wifi, I discovered that I can consistently find the wifi shield only when the external power switch is turned off. I tried re-seating the wifi shield to the cyton board, but that hasn't helped.

So, I can't really answer your questions with any clarity because I've never consistently had it working and I have very limited knowledge about the expected behavior of this device.

    Not sure this helps...

    Jeff, thanks.

One other check you can do with the battery is measure the voltage at the connector (just to confirm your charger and battery are functional.) LiPo cells should be around 4.2v when fully charged. Do you have any other cells you can test with, to eliminate anything that might be odd about the cell you have been using?

If AJ or Joel don't post here with some suggestions -- send an email to contact at openbci.com and ask what the OpenBCI lab can advise.

Conversely if you get a reply from contact with some tips, make a post here.

You can go ahead and email immediately, and likely get some initial response by Monday.

    Regards,

    William

Thanks, William. I've been emailing with AJ - hopefully he'll have some ideas.
