can't find Ganglion on macOS

userjnl6userjnl6 United States
Hello,

When trying to connect Ganglion to OpenBCI_GUI, using 'Bluetooth(Built In)' option, I get the Error 412: Please turn blue tooth on.   I am running the GUI on a Mac Sierra v10.13.3.  And BT is turned on.  Do I need another version of BT, or another driver?

Many thanks!

    Userjnl, hi.

Can you tell us what model / year of Macintosh computer you have? That is available from the Apple menu in the upper left, "About this Mac". Under the macOS version will be the model and year.

Have you tried connecting to the Ganglion from another Mac that you have? (Is that a possible workaround?)

A certain very few models of Mac hardware, have Bluetooth hardware that does not seem to be compatible with Ganglion. I'm going to see if we can post here on this thread which models are known to have that condition.

For these models, there is workaround, by using a special Bluetooth dongle that operates as a USB serial port. It is called BLED112, and the OpenBCI_GUI / Hub works with it when you make that selection. Cost is about $10 from Digikey.

    Thanks,

    William

Thanks for the advice.  I have a Mac mini (Mid 2010).

Aha, the 2010 explains it. That predates the creation / adoption of Bluetooth 4.0, "Bluetooth Low Energy". Apple probably designed your Mac no later than 2009.

You're going to need the BLED112 dongle. That 'should' work, unless there is some other issue. You have a late macOS, so should be fine there.

Great, that explains it.  Many thanks!
  • @userjnl you just need a BLED112!
