Hardware Settings on the Cyton

Hi,

I want to ensure that my Cyton is correctly configured in the OpenBCI GUI.

What should the hardware settings in the GUI be set to?  I only do EEG recordings - I have no inputs nor any custom coding.
- My gain is 24x (I am ok with this one)
- Input type is Normal - I am not sure what all the rest are?
- Bias is Include - I think this is correct
- SRB2 is ON - not sure what this does
- SRB1 is No - not sure what this does

Note that in my Cyton wiring I have the left and right ear clips connected to BIAS1 and SRB1.  The provided splitter cable connects SRB1 on the Cyton with SRB1 on the Daisyboard (keeping the reference signal the same between the two boards).

Can someone shed some light on this?

  • Hey! Yeah, steep learning curve, huh? I expect it is all quite straightforward for those who have done this sort of thing with other hardware or have lots of experience playing with Arduino... But if you're like me, it can be a bit daunting at first.

    So as far as I understand it your GUI is set up in the default manner, but I think you either need to put your SRB earlobe reference on the bottom SRB2 pin, or you need to turn off SRB2 and turn on SRB1 in the GUI. 

    Again, I might be wrong, as I'm honestly totally new to this, but as far as I understand, "BIAS" is a way of removing unwanted "noise" from your other data, so yes, "include". The SRB pins seem to be the reference pins (when you measure an EEG signal, or any biosignal, you're measuring it's activity relative to some other point, like an earlobe or mastoid bone or center top of head or whatever). So yes, you need to have SRB on if your reference, your earlobe electrode, is connected to it. 

    From what I've learned from the forums, Bias1 and 2 are the same. But SRB1 and 2 differ in an important way. This is discussed in the initial setup tutorial (http://docs.openbci.com/Tutorials/01-Cyton_Getting%20Started_Guide#cyton-getting-started-guide-v-connect-yourself-to-openbci-2-connect-your-electrodes-to-openbci) secton V-2:

    • "SRB1 (the top SRB pin) can also be used as a reference, but when it is activated, it is activated for ALL channels..."
    So SRB2 can be used as a reference for some, but not all. Which makes it useful in the tutorial which also does some muscle and heart-rate data. But maybe if you're just doing EEG, then SRB1 is fine, since all other measures will reference it. But in that case, I'm pretty sure you need to turn off SRB2 and turn on SRB1 in the GUI.

    The default settings are what you want for EEG. The tutorial only changes some of these to allow simultaneous EEG EEC EMG recording. EEG is at microvolt level, whereas EMG and ECG are millivolts. The tutorial adjusts settings so that the strong ECG EMG signals do not swamp out the weak EEG signals.

    You want to be using all the Cyton pins that are CLOSEST to the board. This includes the SRB2 pin which is the default reference. You do not want or need to use the other SRB1 pin. Again, all the settings default correctly for EEG use.

    By the way, some of your posts spell the OpenBCI board with an unusual name, 'Cryton'. The actual board name is 'Cyton', which was picked because it is part of neural anatomy. You can also listen to the pronunciation on this page,

    Wow - don't I feel like a dolt!  All this time I thought it was spelled the other way.  I've corrected my website.  Sorry about that!

    If there is any way for you to edit the incorrect spelling in my older posts, I'd appreciate it.

    Don, whoops. Didn't mean to be embarrassing. Let me edit some of the thread titles. I'm not sure I can get all the occurrences of Cryton, there are quite a few in the texts of the threads. There is no "global replace" option in the forum.
