Cyton dongle not connecting with the cyton board.

edited May 2018 in Cyton
Hello,
We have the 8 channel Cyton board and we were acquiring data on OpenVibe and recently the bluetooth dongle does not show up in the list of devices for us to connect to, we are unable to establish a connection between the dongle and board and hence unable to collect any data.
The blue light on the dongle and the cyton board is present when we connect it to our systems but with the OpenBCI GUI and OpenVibe we are unable to establish a connection.
We have tried it out on both Windows and Mac, it behaves randomly sometimes and connects out of some luck but 99% of time time we are unable to make it work.
This is a recent problem that we are facing. Please provide us a solution for the same.
Thank you!

    Sahana, hi.

You can try re-flashing the dongle firmware,

It's very important to use the RFduino dongle firmware that matches what is installed on the Cyton mainboard PIC and RFduino processors. Do you know what version you have? When did you purchase this?

    Regards,

    William

  • Hello William,
We bough this just around 3 months ago so I think the firmware is pretty much up to date, but we could try and re-flash it.
Are there any other suggestions on trying to make it work?
I tried checking if it turns up in the list of devices on both a mac and a windows laptop but it doesn't seem to show up there or on the OpenBCI GUI list either.

    Regards,

    Sahana.

    Sahana, hi.

If the dongle is not showing up as a COM port or /dev device when you plug it in, the symptoms sound like the flash firmware may need reflashing. That has worked in the past for other users.  But here is the catch: you need a working COM port to reflash. If there is no COM port, it sounds more like the FTDI chip may be bad. Are you using the latest FTDI drivers?

    William

  • Hello, we are using the lastest FTDI drivers but it still doesn't seem to be working.
Since this is school properly we cannot flash the firmware on the dongle so, any other suggestions?
Still doesn't show up as a device on the system.

    Regards,
    Sahana

Send an email to contact at openbci.com and include a link to this thread on the forum. Your dongle sounds intermittent, especially since it shows up in rare cases but usually not. Mentioning @openbci

Hi, our cyton board dongle seems to have stopped working .
it lights up upon connection and then stops blinking and it is not recognised in the OpenBCI GUI .
The board was purchased in Jan .Is there anything that can be done to fix it?

Have you tried using the dongle on another laptop or OS?

    @SUSH123, hi.

I merged your question about your dongle into this existing thread. See some of the previous posts.

How likely is that the dongle is physically damaged if it is not recognized in all Linux / Mac and Windows OS?

Is it possible that the firmware gets corrupted during regular use (if re-flashing) fixes it?

I'm not quite sure I understand your situation.

Is this the case: your Cyton dongle works for a short amount of time after reflashing the dongle firmware, but then it fails. And you have tried this several times, but the failures keep occurring. Is that what you are saying?

If so it could be that the RFduino / flash memory is defective and does not stay programmed.

Please send an email to contact at openbci.com and describe your situation. You can also link to this forum thread.

Hi - In my situation, the cyton dongle stopped working after a few weeks. I never re-flashed it.
The laptops (windows, mac or linux) does not even detect the dongle as a device. The blue light in the dongle glows but the device is not detected.

I just wanted to know if re-flashing will fix it or is the dongle physically damaged.

    Cheers!

If it is not showing up as COM port, then it cannot be reflashed. Email to contact and explain your situation. Mentioning @openbci.
