open_bci_v3.py gets samples after board is turned off

I have run into an issue where samples are being read from the serial port after the board is turned off. I am using the open_bci_v3.py module to interact with the board/dongle.

I connect to the board using the user.py. The data gets sent to a GUI I created and plotted. While testing, I turned the board off without explicitly sending a "stop streaming" message to the board. The TX light on the dongle will then blink read and data continues to be plotted in my GUI. I added some print functions to open_bci_v3.py and found out that the _read_serial_binary() function continues to read samples from the serial port.

Has anyone else experienced this or know why samples continue to be read after the board is turned off?
