  • i'm having the issue; did you resolve it?

    Sooj, hi.

The other links previously in this thread, say that the problem has been resolved in Hub versions greater than or equal to v1.3.9. Are you running the latest GUI?

Alternatively can you check your process status or process manager and be sure there are no other Hub instances running?

    It's working, thank you!

Have you tried running it as Administrator / root user ?

    What OS and hardware?

GUI opens now, troubleshooting bluetooth, as the dongle is not picking it up in "BLE DEVICES" section.

  • I'm using an older dongle FT231x. Does GUI only work with CSR dongle? Any way for me to get the GUI to work while I wait for it to ship?
  • wjcroftwjcroft Mount Shasta, CA
OK, sorry for my confusion. When you mentioned BLE, I thought you were dealing with the Ganglion.

The Cyton dongle, yes, should show up as a COM port or /dev/tty* on your OS. NOT as a BLE device.

What OS / hardware are you using? (Asked this before.)

  • Hi William - I'm using Windows 10 Home / ASUS
  • Hm ok so the COM3 shows up on Cyton under Serial/COM Port but the blue light is off on the dongle now for some reason, after I installed the FTDI driver. The error message at the bottom of the GUI window logs "Init timeout. Verify your Serial/COM Port. Power DOWN/UP your OpenBCI & USB Dongle. Then retry Initialization."
  • hmm i reinitiated, the blue light is back on the dongle, and the GUI log now reads "cyton: openNewLogFile: opened ODF output file: SavedData\OpenBCI-RAW-2018-03-18_15-08-22.txt" but I don't see any text file or anything on the GUI For that matter.

Use the Radio Config panel to be sure that the dongle and mainboard are on the same channel.

Is this a recent purchase? If so it will have recent firmware. If not, you may need to upgrade your firmware.

  • Hm the "status" on the radio configuration shows "ÿÿ" or "Error connecting to Serial port. Try a different port?" I tried on all 3 available USB port on my laptop, and same error messages show.

It was purchased a few years ago.  How do I upgrade the firmware?
  • wjcroftwjcroft Mount Shasta, CA
That likely explains why the newer GUI is having an issue connecting to the older firmware. If you have a copy of the GUI you downloaded when you purchased, it may have a better time connecting with the old firmware.

To upgrade the Cyton firmware requires updating all three processors (2 RFduinos and 1 PIC32/chipKIT).

  • Thank you, William! Very excited to try. How much time do you recommend that I budget for firmware upgrade?
Also I found the older versions...will try with 2015 version before upgrading firmware. http://openbci.com/index.php/software

Firmware upgrade can take some time, possibly a couple hours. Note that you have to have access to some jumper cables, capacitor, etc. The steps in the process are somewhat intricate.

If you can work with older GUI, that might be enough to get you started.
  • works, using the 2015 version! :) thank you
  • wjcroftwjcroft Mount Shasta, CA
Cool. Glad you spotted that 2015 GUI version in the download area!

And note, many bugs were fixed and features added in subsequent firmwares & GUIs.
  • Haha, sounds like I'll have to update firmware eventually then. Thanks again!

I am also getting an error when attempting to run the OpenBCIHub as an administrator. The error is: OpenBCIHub Fatal Error listen EADDRINUSE 127.0.0.1:10996. I am not a programmer and have no idea how to fix this. It is version 1.3.9 and I am using the CSR 4.0 dongle that came with my ultracortex. I followed the instructions on the website: http://docs.openbci.com/OpenBCI Software/01-OpenBCI_GUI#the-openbci-gui-running-the-openbci_gui-running-on-windows.
I am sure I did something incorrect in the installation. However, I cannot figure it out. If anyone has installation instructions that are easier to follow/more succinct, that may help me identify where I went wrong.
    Thank you!

Hi. I am having the same error on Windows 10 and I am using the version v1.4.6-win-64-64bit  of the HUB,
Any idea of how to fix it?

    Thanks!

@Tilano, hi. Are you running as Windows Administrator? Ganglion or Cyton? CSR or BLED112?

    William

  • TilanoTilano United States
I am running window as administrator on a virtual machine on a mac. the idea is to connect to a ganglion board.
  • wjcroftwjcroft Mount Shasta, CA
@Tilano, ok, that might explain some of the complications you are seeing. Does the Ganglion work ok connected to the OpenBCI_GUI, running on the Mac? Are you trying to use the CSR dongle with the Windows emulation? Why do you need Windows to connect to Ganglion?

VM emulation of USB and BLE devices is not always 100% compatible with a native OS running on the bare metal. If you are trying to use the CSR dongle on the Windows emulation, that might be too many layers of abstraction to work correctly. The BLED112 dongle connects to the OS as a plain USB serial port, so might be a better route than the CSR dongle.

    Regards,

    William

The open GUI works ok on the mac and I am able to connect to the ganglion board, I was trying to run it on windows because I want to interface with brainBay (which works only on windows).

My goal is to do brain machine interface using the beta band on the EEG. Do you know what would be the best alternative for a mac ?

    Thanks
  • wjcroftwjcroft Mount Shasta, CA
I would not give up on BrainBay yet. Are you using the proper CSR dongle with the Windows emulation? Did all the Zadig etc. installation steps work? You can purchase a BLED112 at several sites, about $10

Another alternative might be to run the OpenBCI_GUI on Mac, and use the Networking widget to create a LabStreamingLayer output stream. Then receive that stream on Windows with OpenViBE.

Yet another alternative if you have BLED112, is to use BioEra. BioEra natively supports BLED112 on Windows.

    Hi @vichu12,

I merged your question into this existing thread. Look at previous posts. Are you running as root / administrator? Running the latest GUI / Hub? What OpenBCI board, OS, etc.
