no ECG or EEG alpha, just noise

Hiya! So I'm following this getting started guide ... 

However, I can't seem to get the heart beat or the alpha waves appearing. I've tried all the different settings but nothing clear cut appears, almost just noise. What are the obvious things I could be doing wrong or not doing?

I've attached a few pictures if it helps.

    With any biosignal device, if you connect all three electrodes together with paste or clips (channel, reference, ground), you will see close to zero microvolts as a result.

    Looking more closely at your GUI screen, I see that your notch filter (upper left button), seems to be set at 60 hz (US mains freq), vs 50 hz (Europe mains frequency). Press it once to toggle to 50 hz. The graphs for channel 3 (your arm electrodes), show a lot of mains noise. The FFT also shows this as a hump at 50 and a large one at 25 (subharmonic of 50). Use the round buttons at the left of the signal graphs to turn off the unused channels 1, 2, 4.
