Cyton "Error connecting to Serial Port. Try a different Port?"

edited September 2017 in Cyton
Hello,

I have been using a Cyton OpenBCI for the last weeks, and successfully streamed data using LSL. For two days now, the Cyton simply does not connect anymore. The blue light on the dongle is on. When I start an LSL stream through Python, I get the message that a serial interface is enabled. However after typing "/start", the red light on the dongle does not turn on, there is no light on the Cyton board, and I do not receive data in my receiving LSL software.
Any ideas what might be going on?

Best,
Marius

Do you get any stream through the OpenBCI_GUI? Have you tried this Cyton on another laptop?

  • No, in the OpenBCI_GUI, I keep getting "Error connecting to Serial Port. Try a different Port?", even if I put the dongle out and in and restart the GUI several times. I made sure the switch on the dongle is on "GPIO_6".
I have not tried this on another laptop, but I don't have another one near. Is there something else I could try before getting another laptop, maybe even something obvious?

When you plug / unplug the dongle, do you see a serial port show up in your Device Manager? What OS? Have you tried reinstalling the FTDI drivers, etc.?
  • Yes, the serial port "COM4" shows up when I insert the dongle. I run the OpenBCI_GUI on Windows 7. I have not reinstalled my FTDI drivers. Is that the most reasonable way to go?
  • I have updated my FTDI driver, still the same error. In detail, I get the same error when using my "V3-8" board (which does not blink any LED light. I don't remember how it was when it still worked, is that normal?), and when using my "V3-32" (which does turn on its blue LED when powered up).
Might I be missing something obvious here?
  • I have now tried connecting both my V3-8 and my V3-32 board to another PC (Windows 10, FTDI driver up to date), with the matched dongles. I get the same error message.
This is getting bizarre. Any idea what might be the problem?

Marius, hi. Sorry for troubles you are having.

Mentioning AJ @pushtheworld. This sounds like it could be related to the version of the OpenBCI_GUI you are using. Can you possibly try another GUI version or building the GUI from source? Which GUI do you have?

To avoid confusion, the "V3-32" board you have is simply called Cyton. The "V3-8" is Cyton-ATmega. Did you say on another thread that you are running the 2.0 or 3.0 firmware on the Cyton? As you know the ATmega firmware is frozen at 1.0, but should still be compatible with all versions of GUI.

  • Hi, marius, sorry for all these trouble. I don't think it's related to the OpenBCI_GUI because the problem is happening on the OpenBCI_Python driver too.

I wonder if your dongle could have been damaged?

When you plug the dongle in do you see a blue power light? Thanks!
