Electrode placement for 'group flow' capture

Hi There,

I know this one is far fetch but I'll shoot, who knows...magic happens
I would like to try and capture EEG recording while in a 'flow/group flow' state and have 2 Ganglion Boards for this task. I should make a 'bet' on the placement of the electrode, where would it make more sense to place them according to the 10-20 model?

Thanks in advance,
Oshri

    Oshri, hi.

If this is a 'meditative' environment and participants are sitting with their eyes closed, then just detecting alpha at occipitals (O1, O2 or Oz) or parietals (Pz) may be sufficient. However this same alpha increase would happen individually, so is not a sign of group effect.

And truthfully, meditation is not technically considered a flow state. Flow implies you are active on some task and completely present, engaged, creative, spontaneous, mind-body integrated, etc.

PS Mikey Siegel has done a meditative-style group process called HeartSync using ECG / HRV. HRV is considerably easier to process than EEG pattern recognition. But again this is not typical 'flow' since participants can't move much; movement artifact will disturb both ECG and EEG.

Brain-to-Brain Synchrony Tracks Real-World Dynamic Group Interactions in the Classroom

    Highlights
    • We report a real-world group EEG study, in a school, during normal class activities
    • EEG was recorded from 12 students simultaneously, repeated over 11 sessions

    Hi William,

Thanks for the detailed reply, highly appreciated, will have a look into the links you shared.
Agree, meditative state isn't the one I'm aiming to capture, I'm more into capturing the active process you have described and I do have a concern that the body movements will create interference/noise to the point the recording will be irrelevant, I guess I won't know unless I try.
I'll be going to a festival in 3 weeks time from now (burning man) and would try to get and capture a flow state in different environments, it can be artistic gatherings and might be an outdoor party, let's see what I can come up with...

    Best Regards,
