on Mac, "OpenBCI_GUI is damaged and can't be opened"

edited February 2017 in OpenBCI_GUI
I'm using a 2015 MacBook air with OS X Yosemite version 10.10.5. When I try to open the OpenBCI_GUI I see the message: “OpenBCI_GUI” is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash.

I tried to open the app on two other older MacBooks, it happened with both of those as well. Any ideas?

thanks so much,
Nina and Alec (Colorado College undergrads starting an independent study)

Have you tried installing the GUI from the source?

    https://github.com/OpenBCI/OpenBCI_Processing

Did you previously install from binaries / executables?

    http://openbci.com/index.php/downloads

Something may be incompatible with the binary version.

  • I was downloading the binaries and it wasn't working. I tried your method but I didn't figure out how to download it simply from the source cause I'm new to coding

I changed my security preferences from downloading apps only from "Mac App Store and identified developers"  to "Anywhere" and that fixed it.

thanks for the ideas William :)

Nina, ah, thanks for that reminder.

Another way to launch apps that do not have a valid Mac developer signature: is to right or option click on the app icon (in folder or desktop). Then select 'Open'. This will then prompt you to confirm you want to open an unsigned app.

Once the app has been opened the first time, it won't nag you again. So you can set your security preferences back to the default if you wish.

    William

  • Hey on macOS seirra the "Anywhere" option is hidden by default so follow this instructions

of if your too lazy to read

    close system settings
    open terminal
    sudo spctl --master-disable

    and boom done
  • I had the same issue and struggled to solve it until I found this post. Thanks!

Just wanna put it out there that mac users will keep running into this issue, and that wjcroft's comment about right-clicking and selecting 'Open', while that works in all other cases, does not actually work with the current version of OpenBCI GUI. So for now, Mac users should be informed they have to use that command prompt.

    Hi all,
it seems that the latest version of the GUI for MAC is corrupted and cannot be installed.
Can anyone else also confirm that?

    cheers.

What message are you getting at what stage? (Unzip, open app, etc.)

after unzipping and while opening the app, the following message pops-up:
OpenBCI_GUI” is damaged and can’t be opened. You should move it to the Trash.

What version macOS are you running? What hardware?

@compmonks, hi again. I merged your question into this existing thread. See some of the previous suggested fixes. They worked for others. Let us know if that resolves your situation.

  • @wjcroft,
thank you the above fix solved my case as well.

    Cheers

This problem occurs if you are not set up to run apps from 'Anywhere'.

This is easy to do in settings on OS prior to Sierra, but in Sierra you need to do some special things. Go here to unlock the 'Anywhere' option on Sierra.

We will make sure to duplicate this where it is relevant throughout the Learning pages
  • I just fixed this! Woooo

Sorry code signing is hard and that was confusing but now when you download the apps are properly signed and ready to drag and drop into the applications folder!
