GUI blank window / libraries not found

edited February 2017 in OpenBCI_GUI
After finally getting my Ganglion, I excitedly downloaded and tried to stat the OpenBCI GUI, but it just simply didn't work.
I'm working on a 64-bit Windows 10. I tried a few different things: updating my java, re-downloading the 64-bit version, downloading and re-downloading the 32-bit version and trying that. Nothing worked. The .exe file always opens up a blank window which stays blank indefinitely.
Help?

    Hello,
Did you search for any log file? At my folder structure of the GUI I don't see anything like a log file but I didn't have any crash.
Alternatively, have you tried it through the Processing IDE

Do you have the latest FTDI drivers installed?
Also, did you run the steps with the bluetooth dongle and zadig? Not sure if this may cause a problem at the initialize of the GUI but just checking.
  • Hi Celticharp

Thank you for your help. I went and tried to run it from the Processing IDE. I followed the instructions to the letter but every time I try to run it it still says that I have multiple libraries missing. The libraries are there, however.
I have tried a few ideas to fix this but got nowhere. I even tried a 2.x edition of Procession and older versions of the code supposedly compatible with Processing 2.x, but nothing worked.

In the past when the GUI window opens blank, it usually means your graphics chip drivers are out of date. Processing depends on OpenGL which needs latest hardware support. Check your computer manufacturer website and make sure you have the latest drivers built specifically for your machine.

Hi everyone! Thanks for your help so far!

After updating my graphic chip driver and everything, I still get the same issue with the .exe GUI.
I tried to run the GUI through the Processing IDE then, but I get the same problem every single time. The console displays multiple lines of "no library found for [blank]", even though I had put all the libraries that came with the GUI in a folder named libraries in the sketchbook, as instructed in the "Getting started" tutorial.
Any ideas on how I can fix this?

Hi, I am having a similar issue. When starting the GUI, OpenBCI opens up blank?  The title bar shows 9fps and the name of the program being OpenBCI.  The GUI has a plain white background.  I run my laptop through an extension screen, so proved this out of display problems that can sometimes occur like that, and my graphic drivers are up to date.

I have unzipped the GUI on my Win7 64bit machine, attempting to get started with my new 16ch R&D kit that arrived today.  I have been through all the woes on why it wasn't working, false info about no flashing LED on the Cyton, installing FTDI drivers etc, but can confirm there is a connection after about 2 hours of faffing about.  I must say it isn't obvious when it's connected.

The way I had to confirm it, was by using OpenVibe, the acquisition server would start on my machine, and once set correctly it would connect.  A piece of cake really.  When I turned the Cyton boards switch to "OFF", I loose the connection.  I can now confirm there is a connection between the laptop and the OpenBCI hardware, using COM4 on up to date FTDI and graphics chip drivers.  But the GUI won't work :(    There are no errors pointing to a particular problem either...

Can you try on another laptop or OS?

I have a Win 10 micro PC, and a currently in need of rebuild RPI3. So I guess in the name of fault finding I can try the Win10 doofer? My concern is Ahmed has the problem with a Win10 machine too. Is this just specific hardware proving? Flag that because it only has 1 usb port meaning to have keyboard /mouse I need a hub

I'm getting a PC specific for the purpose this week *sigh*. I suppose I need to try it. Has this problem occured before?

Well, I would say that Windows hardware platform is so variable, that many more driver and device issues pop up. Mac at least wins that comparison hands down. :-)

The pre-built zip exes are no where near 100% work on all machines. Best to build from source if you are having issues.

I am so so close.  I have learned a butt load tonight, but have hit a bump at "Libraries must be installed in a folder named 'libraries' inside the 'sketchbook' folder."  I think I have done all that is required, but what is the most likely mistake for a Win7 machine and it's user?

Please confirm for me if the "sketchbook" folder is a name for a typical default documents folder which vary across systems. I have named a folder "libraries" in several locations to cover my bases, including library locations on Win7 - Technically being C:\Users\[user]\Documents\libraries.  I'm definitively getting there, I just can't figure out where this last step is going wrong?

The error occurs when clicking 'run' in processing.

  • @BasilBlunt that's exactly the point where I got stuck. Please keep me posted on any progress you make! Thanks
  • Well I have now tried running the .exe for install, built from source twice using every possible link provided in this thread and links within those threads, and still the same result.

The most useful link I found for 'clarification' of what I think is the MOST confusing part of all instructional pieces is below.  To me this really ensured I had the correct path I was putting my libraries in to, which IMO is usually described in a confusing manner.

Although I'm not an expert, I would hazard a guess most people having an issue at this point like us can at least find any .pde file somewhere in their system.  Meaning, for some of you with a problem close to this, maybe an easier way would be to double click any .pde to just get Processing to open, and from there check the actual path name Processing 'thinks' it should be looking in?  You could even copy the address to your Windows Explorer address bar to know it's without human error.

If you do double click a .pde, and Processing opened... Go to file\preferences and all will become apparent!

Anyway - NOW, I am still stuck at "Could not run the sketch (Target VM failed to initialize)."  Everything has been done to the letter, I have come so far... I really am at my wits end.  I have another PC coming tomorrow night, but don't feel this is going to resolve anything.  I suppose we have run out of instructional links and suggestions?  I only have the one left to try which is get a new PC in to the mix.

  • Hi everyone, a little reset on my story first... From here on in I am now ONLY using a full Linux based system.

I've sorted my gear out. I have gone with a full Linux Ubuntu 16.04 build on a PC intentionally bought for just this purpose. No longer was I going to have the thought looming over my head that the gear wasn't right, so went out and bought me a "brain lab computer" lol. For reference it's a Dell 990 i7 quad-core 3.4G with 8GB ram, and is 100% Linux certified hardware. Everything has gone swimmingly with this box and Linux could not be more up to date :)

    The OpenBCI_GUI build...
    1. Linux up to date
    2. FTDI drivers installed
    3. Processing 3.3 installed
    4. Java 8 installed (this may have been for Openvibe actually but is installed in any case)
    5. OpenBCI_GUI & OpenBCI_Processing cloned
    6. Step 5 items extracted and libraries placed as instructed and confirmed
    7. Run for eg. OpenBCI_GUI.pde
    8. And it fails on not finding libraries still...

I have knocked out the hardware incompatibility by buying a new PC, and this has shown positive results in how much further it has got me in a few things already, so am confident in this department. No issue running Processing, but want to see OpenBCI working  :(

For me; OpenBCI_GUI still can't seem to find the library items, and everything
checks out as done to the letter. I'm hoping any Linux user can actually confirm a recent
install, maybe you can shed some light on a common mistake I might be making?  I have dead stock folder set up, fresh install, and all is quite clear to me now on https://github.com/OpenBCI/OpenBCI_Processing, so confident there as well.

There must be something I have not seen?  I am really wanting to get OpenBCI_GUI up and running.

UPDATE: I seem to have fixed library issues.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I think the instructions I was following may not have included copying the other library contents from the OpenBCI_GUI-master to the libraries folder (may be obvious to some).  This has eradicated the complaint of libraries not found, but up against the next road block.

"The function setFont(PFont) does not exist." when trying to run the OpenBCI_GUI.pde.  All and all a step forward, so i'll keep a few updates happening in the hope it can help or I can be helped :)

This is how it presents now, highlighting the setFont line...

    // println("dropdowns.get(i).id = " + dropdowns.get(i).id);
          cp5_widget.addScrollableList(dropdowns.get(i).id)
            .setPosition(x0+w0-(dropdownWidth*(dropdownPos))-(2*(dropdownPos)), y0 + navH + 2) //float right
            .setFont(h5)
            .setOpen(false)
            .setColor(dropdownColors)
            .setSize(dropdownWidth, (dropdowns.get(i).items.size()+1)*(navH-4) )// + maxFreqList.size())
            .setBarHeight(navH-4)
            .setItemHeight(navH-4)
            .addItems(dropdowns.get(i).items) // used to be .addItems(maxFreqList)

PS.  If I try a 'show usage' on it, it says "Cannot find usages, try and fix errors in your code first" if this helps at all

    I have the GUI running!

I literally had done nothing on this PC since the last error, but I just started the GUI, and it worked on the first try after coming back to it from a couple of days break!  So - I can confirm, that Linux Ubuntu 16.04 runs the OpenBCI_GUI on my machine, and the instructions I followed, are ALL contained within links from this thread.  Thanks to wjcroft for the assistance, looking forward to some brain time with my R&D kit now.
