Ultracortex / neurofeedback

edited February 2017 in Headware

Hi
William,

I
am planning to purchase the OpenBCI R&D kit to start experimenting with neurofeedback.
My question is about the Ultracortex IV, trying to analyze the pros and con

Pro:

  - Quick deployment

  - Electrodes aligned to standard 10-20

  - Can be self-contained device,
including hosting place for the boards, battery and so for

Con:

   - Pricy, adds about $700 to the total cost

   - Doesn't support gold cups electrodes
attached to the scalp

   - Since electrodes are not attached to the
scalp, it may be harder to get good readings (signals) Please confirm

If
I can find a simple way to map the electrodes allocation to the
scalp based on the 10-20 standard it may work same or better than using
the Ultracortex, is that correct?

Thank
you,

Mauricio

    Mauricio, hi.

Pete Van Deusen has an excellent protocol suite that will now support Cyton and not too much later, Ganglion. (Via 'Bioexplorer' app.) This can be used with or without an Ultracortex. Both OpenBCI boards support gold cup electrodes or any other electrode system.

  • @Mauricio,

Most neurofeedback protocols use only a few active
electrode sites, usually one or two.  These are easily located by
measuring.  Thousands of neurofeedback sessions are run every day in
this way by clinicians using gold or silver electrodes and paste.
Exceptions are LORETA and multiple-z-score protocols, which require more
electrodes.  Starting with surface electrodes and paste is also the best way to learn good EEG methods.  Poor electrode application technique is the the biggest problem at first.

    Best regards,
    Michael
