What is the advantage of using a cap / gel?

edited February 2017 in Headware
Hi!

I have read somewhere here on the forums, that it would simply be possible to just put electrodes on with gel. If that is the case, what would be the exact advantage of using headware? Is the contact quality better in any way or does it simply allow a quicker and more consistent setup?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Electro-cap is a widely used standard cap here in the U.S.

But it is messy, requires cleanup and maintenance, and considerable time. Just popping on a headset takes seconds and no cleanup.

However for clinical and research use, caps and gel give higher signal quality and less subject to movement artifact.

  • Thanks for the quick answer!

How does using no cap at all, and only velcro bands/duct tape(?) with gel compare to using one? Will the signal quality suffer?

I know that's a strange question, but to what degree do we lose signal quality when only using dry electrodes with the ultracortex? I'd be using the openBCI for neurofeedback and meditation purposes, so I can imagine that a consistent signal quality would be the best way to go.

    Thanks a lot!

Signal quality for meditation is fine with dry electrodes. See all the apps and articles on the Muse headband.
