Sleep study / EDF acquisition or conversion

We have just purchased the OpenBCI 16-channel R&D kit. After following the setup instructions, we were able to record EEG, ECG, and EKG signals! 

One of the projects we would like to use this system for is in a sleep study. Are there any other research groups that use OpenBCI for sleep studies? We would like to carry out a polysomnography (PSG). Does OpenBCI offer a PSG analysis software? Does anyone know of any open source PSG software that can be integrated with OpenBCI? Or any other information on how we can set one up?

  • I think the best way to go about this is to convert the signals into EDF format, since there are many open source software that read EDF format. Do you think that would be best?

    If someone has used/converted to EDF format previously, how can the signals from the OpenBCI system be converted into EDF format?

    EDF Browser has various built in converters, including Ascii to EDF.

  • Hello @TFNANO Excellent idea.  I am actively waiting for the kickstart to deliver my new OpenBCI toys so I can do the same.  The sleep study aspect would be just one of the portions of what I would like to accomplish, however, THE integral part.  

    My purpose is centered around improving quality of sleep, and especially for those 18+million that suffer from sleep apnea, through qualitative analysis of the sleep patterns measured and compared against other daily activities that contribute to a bad/good night's rest.  

    This application would give people a means to be their own health advocates.  It's like the doctor in Hee-Haw would say to the patient who complains that it hurts when he "does this" - he says, then DON'T DO THAT!  I just need to figure out what THAT is.

    I can contribute software & hardware prototyping services, as well as doing some sleep studies too - to all hopefully contribute to this somehow.  At the very least, we can contribute to the community's ability to programatically  recognize and log various well know sleep events that can be used by others.

  • [email protected] and @TFNANO check out http://www.spisop.org/openbci/ it explains how you can use OpenBCI and record sleep data and convert it also to EDF and Brainvision files. You can use the SpiSOP tool also for subsequent sleep scoring and other sleep EEG stuff.

  • The world really needs to begin investigating blockchaining (sp?) EDF recordings. This is needed because EDF can be exported to ASCII, the ASCII edited and then imported back into EDF, providing a venue to alter and/or compromise these medico-legal recordings. As well, another needed process would be to watermark the recording via embedding invisible known frequencies at known power levels (e,g, 40hz @ 2% total power for x ms) into the recording so that only later analyses (FFT) can determine if said signals are present. This process would use a code to set the watermark of the recording, and this code could also be the seed value for the second by second blockchain process. I am speaking in the bigger picture than just OpenBCI makers. Like the powers that be should mandate EEG/Sleep recording system to lock their recordings with these type of processes.

  • Why would anyone have access to the original of EDF file without proper authorization? That is a privacy issue.
    As it stands, being able to alter the identifying data on a digital EEG is nice because it allows the sharing of anonymized files for research.
