after using for a year, power LED getting dim

I`ve had my OpenBCI for almost a year now and this is what happened the other night.
1) I noticed weird activity in the processing software. The OpenBCI GUI started just randomly locking up after a small time period after turning on Live feed from the hardware. It had not done this before, but I assumed it was getting low on battery as the software was functioning and doing its thing, it was just not getting any data from the BCI bluetooth.
2) I put it on the charger for a day (as there are no battery indicators) and after I turned it on the next day, I instantly noticed how the blue diode on the main module had gone a bit bleak. It was definitely brighter before and as I was fiddling with it, it got even bleaker and now it`s gone out completely while the battery was connected.
Now, my question is could it be that the battery or/and the charger is faulty? I`ve got the most default quad-copter battery and charger set-up, and I am manually changing the connector end from the U.S. pin to the European pin every time I have to charge it and this one time I think I accidentally put it in the wrong way around (the black and red wire switched) and the charger kinda smelled like burnt electronics after... however, it did work after that and the red light on the charger still works.
Anyone had any similar experiences?

Since you mention your charger or LiPo cell may be suspect from the reverse polarity hookup -- have you tried a simple test with the default 4 AA alkaline cells? What voltage are you measuring at the battery connector in both cases?
