GUI error: Cannot find anything named "surface"

  Have you done the Step #2E in the tutorial?

  This installs the graphics libraries used by the GUI.  You should also be running latest Processing 3.1.1, not the 2014 2.2.1. The library files have version dependencies.

  yeah I upgraded to the latest Processing
  and received a new error
  
  my console in processing shows this:

  and the one with the error shows shit-load of things that I can't even write out

  You mentioned previously that your OpenBCI works just fine on Windows 8.1. So the issue must be with your Linux setup. Can you try using a serial port monitor and connect to the /dev/ttyUSB0 ?
  
  Sending a question mark there should produce some initialization output from your OpenBCI. The serial port communications is obviously essential. Also see this post,
