Cyton Daisy Board data not coming from the board

Hi,
We have a small black sound proof booth, where we ask participants to sit. I noticed that when we check impedance inside the booth the daisy channels 9 to 16 shows this red error saying the data from the board is not coming and the impedance values goes to 0.

We went ahead with the experiment assuming that can happen only once or twice. The experiment is designed using PsychoPy library and we send commands using BrainFlow APIs. Later, I only got the data for like 3 minutes and then when the participant was finished I saw that the red LED for transmission on the dongle was off and I knew that the data was not collected entirely through the whole experiment. I tried running the whole experiment outside the booth couple of times and its working properly.

Other information about the booth: We connect wired keyboard, Cyton Daisy dongle, and HDMI cable to the laptop. The booth has a big monitor and other EEG electronic (mostly wired) equipment, a laptop, a lamp and a keyboard.

    Hi Shyamal,

Is this a recent purchase? Has it ever worked correctly? Does the Cyton by itself (no Daisy) work ok?

Are you saying that the data stream interruption ONLY happens within your booth? This might indicate that the Bluetooth reception is compromised between the Cyton and the dongle. Although the Daisy should not be a factor in that case, should work the same with or without Daisy. The issue is the dongle Cyton reception / separation.

Have you tried putting the dongle on a usb extension cord and positioning it closer to the Cyton?

    William

  • I think we purchased it about 8 months or 1 year ago. Yes, it does work correctly outside the booth when my laptop is not connected to an external keyboard and HDMI port. No, I haven't tried with only Cyton.

Yes it only happened when I was in the booth and I tried running the experiment 3 times outside the booth and it worked properly.

The laptop where the dongle is connected is inside the booth, so there are actually close to each other. No, I haven't tried USB extension cord or hub. Can it help with the issue ? we can try using it.

Yes, try the extension cord (NOT hub) and situating the dongle closer to the Cyton. The issue with your booth, may be that it has walls that are reflecting / messing with the radio signals in that area. Or the table in the room may be metallic, causing reflections from the dongle situated just above the table surface. Etc.

Another common placement for the dongle on extension cord, is to 'drape' the dongle / cord, over the top of your monitor. This will get it off the table surface, and more radiating in open air. If that does not work, you could try draping over the shoulder of the subject. Etc.

  • I will definitely try the extension cord and situating the dongle closer to the Cyton. Perhaps I will try draping the dongle over the shoulder of the subject. Thanks William, I will update once I try all the things that you mentioned.
