BLE Connectivity with Cyton+Daisy

Hello to all the users of the OPENBCI forum,

My team recently purchased the 'Cyton+Daisy Biosensing Boards (16-channels)' and 'Cyton dongle (replacement)' devices. We have successfully paired the devices with computers, but now we need to pair them with tablet devices (Galaxy Tablet and iPad) and collect biosignals on the tablet applications.

However, during our research on this connection, we have encountered some conflicting information:

  • The product description states that BLE is possible.
  • However, this mentions that BLE is only possible up to 2 channels.
  • Additionally, the last comment on the same post states that BLE is not possible.
I am confused by these conflicting statements and would like to know which one is correct.

Also, if there are no issues with BLE, I would like to know the data token of the raw data received via BLE. (time, channel 1, ...)

Thank you for reading this long post.

No, this is not true. Bluetooth is used, but it is NOT BLE. It is a custom protocol called GZLL, Gazelle. Not compatible with BLE. This is why the dongle must be used.

Correct, that implementation never left alpha phase testing, and only supports BLE with 2 channels.

    • Additionally, the last comment on the same post states that BLE is not possible.

BLE beyond the 2 channel test version is not possible, because of speed and bandwidth limitations with BLE.

Have you considered using an OTG cable with the dongle on your tablet? Check with Andrey on the Brainflow Slack, I think there was some investigation with using that route.

    Thanks to your help.

I was ignorant about wireless connection methods, and your advice was a great help.

So, if I use an OTG cable, do I connect the tablet to the dongle via OTG and then establish a Bluetooth connection?
    (Tablet - OTG - dongle ?)

re: "...and then establish a Bluetooth connection?"

No. When the usb dongle is plugged into a usb host port (either on a laptop or a mobile with a OTG cable), the dongle appears to the OS as a "usb serial port".

Join the Brainflow Slack and ask if Cyton dongle serial ports (via OTG) are possible ways to use the Brainflow library. And the best current recommended approach. The previous link you mentioned here on the Forum, mentioned users who were able to succeed with the OTG route on their tablet.
