Underwater biosensing ?

Hi all,
we are trying to develop a prototype to collect eeg data from freediver(apnea freediver). Our idea for an mvp is a waterproof case with an openbci board inside end electrodes placed in the swimming suite.
What kind of electrodes you suggest to buy? Does you think that we will need to modify them?  Electrodes are place in the neoprene cap that can mantain them fixed and in contact with the body. We supposed that we have few water infiltrations inside the cap and we hope that It not will be a problem.
We have think to start with a 4 channels board and start to collect data to undestand if we need more channels.

    Here is a new type of electrode being developed that can work underwater. Not sure if this answers your question. Most typical electrodes use a conductive gel or paste that is salt based. This would be adversely effected by contact with water or salt water. These new electrodes use a nano structured approach.



    I think their primary use case is with ECG and swimmers. They have also had some EEG tests.

    I saw the wonderful and inspiring video on this sent out by OpenBCI recently!
    As a hobbyist, I've tried to get my Cyton boards to run underwater. I found covering them in hot glue seemed to destroy the signal for me, although I may have made a mistake elsewhere. I want to monitor my mental disability when wet.
    Is there information on the design of the waterproof enclosure available anywhere?

    Hi Baffo,

    I think you are referring to the IDUN video:

    The video clearly shows the "IDUN" logo on the top of the underwater case. You could email them to ask for details. It's possibly 3D printed. Note that the video demos ECG collection, not EEG. The IDUN electrodes likely work better on areas with less hair. And from the video, it appears they placed waterproof tape on top of the chest areas with the ECG sensors. This would require some other solution for scalp usage. Possibly a helmet of some type.

  • They used suction cups with gold electrodes inside for dolphins, but human hair would keep suction cups from working.
