hardware for novice: meditation, focus, TBI
Would you all recommend the low cost starter kit over the electro-cap kit? I don't want to limit myself in terms of number of electrodes as I believe with only 4 channels it might be a bit cumbersome to figure out what is going on everywhere in the brain. My goals are primarily to learn how to meditate better, increase focus, fix potential TBI brainwave patterns and generally train my brain to recognize different states so I can flip between them at will depending on the environment I am in. The Ganglion / dry electrode headband is more likely what would fit your requirements. And allows easy measurement of frontal and occipital / temporal sites. That is 4 channels. The sites measured can actually be extended to other locations, by purchasing some additional velcro 3/4" tape:

If you look at the headband kit, it actually consists of these straps, with holes punched for the electrodes. So a regular hole punch can do the same with the stock tape. For example, straps can be added to span the top of the head (F3, F4, C3, C4, P3, P4, etc.) And adding a chin strap helps to hold down the top of head strap. Etc.
The other kit you mention is 16 channels with the elastic cap and gel. I don't mean to dissuade you, but elastic head caps are normally only worn for a half hour or hour at most. After that period of time they become uncomfortable, due to the constant pressure on the cranial bones. Cranial plates actually move slightly over time, and if this action is frozen, you feel it. I speak from having performed many QEEG sessions. The gel insertion and cleanup of scalp and cap, is another factor. These are all acceptable in research environments. But possibly less attractive for regular home use.

If you are considering using Pete's Brain-Trainer system, then using a wet electrode based system might be better, as that will be closer to what his system expects. Amplitude readouts from the dry electrodes are always somewhat less than with a wet system.
