recenctly I build my openbci cyton and wifi shild (no bluetooth module), without any pickit 3 or any arduino IDE and it library
just i use esptool for program(DefaultWifiShield.2.0.5.bin) wifi shild and use pic32prog with a nano arduino board for program bootloader (UDB32-MX2-DIP.hex)and flash (DefaultBoard.ino.OpenBCI.hex)of PIC32
its very simple ,just 10 minute for program everything https://github.com/sergev/pic32prog/wiki/Using-PICkit3

Connect PIC rx pin to ftdi tx pin and vice versa. Everything else seems fine to me.
