Windows GUI displaying only completely grey window
Hi,
I installed the FTDI driver and the USB dongle appears in the device tree whenever we plug it in.
We installed the GUI. We unzipped it and launched the executable as there is no installation file (is that correct?).
But as you can see from the screenshot the GUI window is just completely empty and grey. Nothing to click. The only thing at the top left is the fps number that occasionally changes value.
How do we get the GUI to work?
Thank you
Rick

Rick, hi.
Blank screen / window is usually due to old OpenGL driver in your Windows. What Windows version and hardware are you using? Best solution is to get the latest graphics drivers for your display hardware, directly from the manufacturer of your PC.

Thank you William,
Windows has been installed fresh on the PC two weeks ago and the only other software on the PC is MS Office. So I don't think that's it. What else can it be?
Thank you
Did you read the search results from the link I gave?
If your PC hardware is older than a few years, depending on the manufacturer -- there may not BE current OpenGL drivers.
I did but but don't want to install other stuff. I checked and reinstalled the drivers (6 months old).
But I then installed Version 4.20 beta) instead of the 4.17 and it works straight away. So that solves it.
Thank you for your feedback.
Mentioning Richard @retiutut, who is our GUI developer.
On your computer, head over to
Documents/OpenBCI_GUI/Console_Dataand share a console log here. If the GUI stays open, it should have created a console log already, and I would like to see what it says.@rick123 Thanks for the info thus far. A Console Log will tell the full story, or the lack thereof, of what's happening in the background.
@retiutut there is no such folder.
There was no installation file, just an executable for the main GUI and when I run it it the GUI appears. Did I download the incorrect files?
@rick123 Then you need to make sure the GUI has permission to access the Documents folder. The next version of the GUI will not require administrator, so for now try:
So there is no
Documents/OpenBCI_GUI/folder? You are running the standalone and the first time you run it, it attempts to copy the sample playback files toDocuments/OpenBCI_GUI/Sample_Data/on all operating systems.@retiutut Is there a non-standalone version? i.e. an installation version?
I am now running the 4.2.0 (beta). Is that the version that you mention that does not require Admin permission?
You can install a version that runs in the Processing Language IDE,
https://docs.openbci.com/docs/06Software/01-OpenBCISoftware/GUIDocs#running-the-openbci-gui-from-the-processing-ide
But the Hub still requires Admin.
It seems odd that the GUI version would have anything to do with the blank screen. Above you said, "...I checked and reinstalled the drivers (6 months old). But I then installed Version 4.20 beta) instead of the 4.17 and it works straight away..." Are you sure the reinstalled drivers did not have a correlation with the 4.20 beta working?
How old is this hardware? What OS are you running? Are you saying you recently did a clean install of Windows 10? Note that the drivers provided by Microsoft do not always match those available on the manufacturer's website.
