DefaultWifiShield.bin works, but DefaultWifiShield.ino doesn't
Hi,
I have been trying to build the wifi code from the source, I have followed the instructions provided on the OpenBCI website. However, when I build everything using Arduino IDE the wifi shield does not work properly using the GUI (i.e. everything is fine (I can see the firmware version, the board name, MAC address etc.) until I press the "start session" button and then nothing happens.... I have tried all the different options available in the GUI(TCP,UDP, 250hz,1000hz etc.), but the same result). However, when I use the prebuilt binary, it works fine. This makes me wonder, is the binary file provided on the git repository the complied version of the DefaultWifiShield.ino file or is it a different source code?
I am using the latest Arduino IDE, windows 10 x64 and the files for firmware 2.0.5.
p.s. I noticed that when I compile using Arduino IDE, the OpenBCI GUI reports the firmware version as 2.0.3 even-though I have used the source codes for version 2.0.5.
Also, I was wondering, what version of ArduinoJson is used to compile the binary version available at the git repository?

Khash, hi.
Sorry for the confusion about which firmware source to use. However, as you can see here, the DefaultBoard source, which is the default firmware for Cyton, contains full Wifi support.
https://github.com/OpenBCI/OpenBCI_Cyton_Library/blob/master/examples/DefaultBoard/DefaultBoard.ino
Can you explain why you are wanting to build from source? What is missing from the default firmware?
Thanks, WIlliam
Ah, my own mixup, you are trying to build the shield firmware, not Cyton mainboard,
https://github.com/OpenBCI/OpenBCI_WIFI/blob/master/examples/DefaultWifiShield/DefaultWifiShield.ino
This document specifies IDE 1.8.3 NOT "latest" IDE as you mentioned,
https://docs.openbci.com/docs/05ThirdParty/03-WiFiShield/WiFiProgam#compile-source-code-to-build-binary
Hi wjcroft,
first, thanks for your reply!
I did change my Arduino IDE to version 1.8.3, but I get exactly the same results.
Basically, here's the issue:
The binary compiled from source (using Arduino IDE) does not match the one provided here:
https://github.com/OpenBCI/OpenBCI_WIFI/releases/tag/v2.0.5
so, my main suspicions are:
https://docs.openbci.com/docs/05ThirdParty/03-WiFiShield/WiFiProgam
Do you know the exact version of the libraries used to produce this binary?
update:
I managed to solve the problem. it had to do with Arduino ESP8266 core from Boards Manager…. the GUI only works if the binary is compiled using Arduino ESP library version 2.5.0 .
Khash, thanks much. Opened an issue on the repo. You can comment further there, but I linked back to this thread.
