Hi everyone,
I write here because I have had a problem with the Cyton Biosensing Board (8-channels) and I like you to help me solve a problem we have found.

I bougth the device in the second half of May and I configured the device by following all the steps in the
tutorial on the page (https://docs.openbci.com/Tutorials/01-Cyton_Getting Started_Guide)
and it worked correctly. However a few days later I tried to connect
it again and it didn't work anymore. The problem that arises is the
following; when I am trying to connect the “OpenBCI Board” and the
“Programmable OpenBCI Dongle” (both devices are programmed correctly
following the instructions in the tutorial, that is, the Cyton board
in PC mode and the Ganglion in GPIO_6 mode), the interface gives the
following message:
“Failed to connect to data source. Check that the device is powered on
and in range. Also, try pressing AUTOSCAN ”

Following the instructions suggested by the error message I tapped
AUTOSCAN and it shows the following incomplete message:
“Cyton dongle could not connect to the board. Perhaps they are on different ”

I would like to know which the error is and how it can be solved. I
Thank you very much in advance,

  • Sofia, hi. Did you try to program either the dongle or the Cyton? By program I mean upload firmware. This is not necessary, and we do not recommend doing this unless you are trying to change the default firmware already on each board/dongle.

I don't believe Sofia is changing any firmware, she just used the phrase "... both devices are programmed correctly ...", referring to the switch positions in the Cyton Getting Started tutorial (not the firmware programming tutorials.)

Sofia, can you try your dongle and Cyton on another computer, to verify that there is not something odd going on with your OS or computer? Are you using the latest GUI software?

Normally the Cyton and dongle retain their factory radio channel default settings. If these are misaligned, AUTOSCAN will re sync them.

When you plug the dongle into a computer, it will show up as a usb serial port in your Windows Device Manager or Mac OS /dev directory. Check that plugging / unplugging the dongle, causes this appear / disappear.

    Thanks for your response,
Yes, William is right, I am not changing any firmware, I was referring to the switch positions.
Yes, I have tried my dongle and Cyton on another computer and it didn't work either, I got the same error. Furthermore, I am using the latest GUI software.

When I plug the dongle into the computer, it doesn't show up as a usb serial port in my Windows Device Manager, but it shows up in the GUI software as COM3.
So, what could be the problem?

    Thanks again,
    Sofía

If the dongle is not showing up in the Device Manager when you plug / unplug it, it means that the FTDI chip on the dongle has likely gone bad. Do you have the latest FTDI driver installed? This Device Manager behavior (no COM port), occurs on both computers you tested on?

  • sofiajh24sofiajh24 Madrid, Spain

I have installed the latest FTDI driver and now, the dongle does show up in the Device Manager when I plug it , but I get the same error, soo what can I do now?

    Sofía.

Sofia, great. Now try the AUTOSCAN directions again, in the Cyton tutorial.

  • sofiajh24sofiajh24 Madrid, Spain

I have already tried the AUTOSCAN directions again ( I have followed this tutorial
https://docs.openbci.com/Tutorials/01-Cyton_Getting Started_Guide) and I have got the same issue.
Do you have another idea to solve the problem?

    Thanks again,

    Sofía

You previously mentioned trying the same tests on another computer. Is that other computer now seeing the COM port? Does it have the latest FTDI drivers? What OS / computer are you using? Have you tried running the GUI on a different OS?

It sounds to me like the COM port is present, but the OS and GUI are not seeing it. This can sometimes be caused by OS or usb issues.

Please, cause this error one more time. Then, provide us with a Console Log File (as text file). You can find the Console Log Button in the top right of the GUI. This will help rule out software issues.

    Hi,
I have attached the Console Log file in this comment.

Richard, I'm I reading this log file correctly? She is using Cyton V1.0 firmware. MAJOR OOPS.

Sofia, your initial comment on this thread said "...I bought the device in the second half of May..." [2019] That cannot be right. The firmware in your Cyton, if purchased then, should be at least at 3.1.x level. Did you purchase this Cyton NEW, or used from someone?

If indeed your firmware is at this very old 1.0 level, you will need to do a firmware upgrade of all three processors: PIC32 and two RFduinos. This can be a daunting task for electronics novices. Do you have a friend who is more savvy with electronics?

    Regards, William

Also, if the firmware is V1.0, you say that in May it worked initially for a few days. But this should be impossible, unless you were using it with a very old GUI software. The V1.0 firmware will not work with current GUI app.

  • sofiajh24sofiajh24 Madrid, Spain

I exactly purchased this Cyton NEW on 16 April 2019, and I received it in the end of May, so I don't know why it has an old firmware. Also, it worked for a few days in the end of May.

Yes, I have. I will talk to them in order to do a firmware upgrade of all three processors.

    Sofía.

  • @sofiajh24 We'll mail a cyton with current firmware. Would you please email [email protected] with your mailing address? Thank you

  • retiututretiutut Louisiana, USA

    @Shirley Thank you.

@William Displaying Cyton firmware as v1.0.0 means the board and dongle have not communicated properly. Should be reading 2.x.x or 3.x.x for practically all boards.

  • wjcroftwjcroft Mount Shasta, CA

@Shirley, hi. When I asked Richard about the log message: "[SUCCESS]: The GUI is done initializing. Settings Loaded! Press "Start Data Stream" to start streaming! -- Cyton firmware v1.0.0" He said this:

1.0 is the hardcoded default i believe, because it's so old at this point.
If it shows 1.0 means something is not communicating

So... that means my last couple comments are not quite right.

  • wjcroftwjcroft Mount Shasta, CA

It could be that the firmware is glitched in one of the RFduinos, or PIC32. We've seen the dongle firmware glitch in the past, and as long as the COM port is showing up, a dongle firmware reload can be tried.

At the same time, since this unit is just a few months old, a replacement from the store seems the most customer friendly thing to do.

  • @sofiajh24 what is the shipping address? We will send a new dongle and Cyton

  • sofiajh24sofiajh24 Madrid, Spain

Ok, perfect! I have sent you an email`to [email protected] with my shipping address.

    Thank you very much!

    Sofía
