electrode / wire crimp connection, influence on signal quality?

How does the red circle part (where the white wire connected with the electrode) influence the EEG signal quality? As it’s easily damaged without the blue plastic’s protection, but we have to separate them for our research.

Thank you very much.

    Z, hi.

Is this an OpenBCI Ultracortex electrode holder? It does not look like the normal holder.

Crimp connections can be protected by using the appropriate type of heat shrink tubing and a heat gun. It's possible with 2 layers to form a decent kind of "strain relief". The inner layer being longer and the outer layer being shorter. So as to redirect the strain away from the actual crimp point.

  • Thank you very much indeed.

Yes. It's an OpenBCI Ultracortex electrode, separated from the blue plastic mount.
If there is one single wire of the whole wires damaged, would it influence the signal quality ?

    Thank you very much.

"If there is one single wire of the whole wires damaged, would it influence the signal quality?"

Do you mean one strand of the insulated stranded wire (cable) that exits the crimp and goes to the connector? No, a single strand will not cause any signal loss. Because these insulated stranded wires contain probably 10 or more strands.

However as soon as possible, have your technician friend help you place some shrink wrap over the crimp connection, so you don't cause further stress.

    Regards,
  • Thank you very much.

Yes. That's exactly what I mean. Thank you for your suggestions which are really helpful.
Actually, I'm sorry there are not any technician friend for me. Could I use the tape to cover on it ?

    Thank you.

Tape is ok. Shrink wrap is better. Go to a computer repair shop.

My typo, I meant "heat shrinkable tubing", not "shrink wrap". After midnight here...

Any tech would be able to do this in 2 minutes. Cost should be less than $10. Or if he just gives you the tubing, you can do it yourself with a butane lighter (be careful).
  • Thank you very much.

I understand about it. It's really helpful.
    Thank you very much indeed.
