'noise' with neuromore. Is the Mac OS FTDI driver fix still needed?

edited April 2019 in Software
I'm able to use the Cyton usb dongle on my Mac. The signal is good in the OpenBCI GUI, but inexplicably noisy in Neuromore. The OpenBCI tutorial for Neuromore specifically says to follow this FTDI driver fix before using the software. But I think that tutorial is outdated, I can't find the drivers in the place the tutorial claims. I'm wondering if anyone has gone through this process recently. Or perhaps the drivers have been updated and this is no longer required at all?

    Jay, hi.

As far as I know, Neuromore has not released any updates or new releases in some years. If you are looking for a well supported package that has far more features targeted to neurofeedback / biofeedback applications, check out BioEra on Windows. (And may run in a VM, ask on the BioEra forum.)

If your Cyton streaming looks fine on OpenBCI_GUI, then the FTDI buffering is not an issue. If buffering IS an issue, it displays as a stuttering in the data stream. There is no extra 'noise', just a stoppage of the data stream a couple times per second.

Another possibility if you are at an academic site, is NeuroPype,

The original neuromore Cyton driver was created when Cyton firmware was at V1. Cyton is now at V3. The data stream format may or may not be backwards compatible.

    Regards,

    William

I just checked the BioEra forum, yes it can be run in a Windows VM on Mac. You need the BioEra version that uses a license dongle (plugs into usb port).

  • Thanks for the comprehensive response! That's good to hear the FTDI driver is alright, but bad news to BioEra is one of the last good options. My macbook can't handle a windows VM on it, I'll have to find something that supports mac os.
