Cyton stream freezes after one to two hours, need 8 hours

[original thread title: Most stable software platform for long duration recordings?]

Unable to get OpenBCI as well as Brainbay to continue recording data after 1-2 hours.  The software remains stable, but the input seems to simply cease.  If I stop and re-initialize the board, all works just fine.  As my research focus revolves around sleep, I need the recording to remain stable for 8 hours.  Any feedback greatly appreciated!

    Maddhat, hi.

You did not mention what OpenBCI hardware you are using, when purchased, what operating system, what laptop, what battery, etc.

The original OpenBCI Cyton V1 firmware exhibited this issue, but that was repaired when V2 came out. We are now at V3.

It's remotely possible that the wifi / bluetooth radio wave environment in your area is causing interference with the transmission to the laptop. In the case of Cyton, you can change the channel using the GUI. With both Cyton and Ganglion, you can use a usb extension cable to position the dongle closer to the mainboard. With Ganglion you should definitely be using BLED112 dongle vs the older CSR dongle.

  • Thank you for the prompt response!

That's great - this gives me a few steps forward.  I purchased the Cyton about a year ago - and it's running on Windows 10.  I'll check for firmware updates.

For the bluetooth dongle, I'm not sure if it's a BLED112 or a CSR.  It's the white PCB based OpenBCI dongle.  States on the radio "RFD22301".

I would hope distance would not be an issue, as it's only 20 feet away, but I'll give an extended USB a try.  Operating on a PC with constant power and no sleep settings.

OK, I only mentioned the CSR vs BLED112 in case you were using Ganglion. Cyton has it's own dongle using RFduino / RFD22301.

Your Cyton is not V1, so firmware should be ok.

My suggestion is the usb extension cord, and also possibly change the Cyton radio channel, using the GUI feature,

If the Section 6., "Optional Settings" looks oddly formatted on that link above, you can view the page directly on the Github site,

  • Thanks so much for the additional information - will try this and report back!

Maddhat, were you able to resolve the freeze issue with your Cyton?

I agree with @wjcroft. Try a USB extension chord for the Cyton Dongle!

Also, the team is looking into the issue of longer recordings, and how to handle them properly!
