using another electrode as a reference (vs ear clips)

Could I use openBCI without the ear clips (linked earlobes) and use only a common reference with another electrode?

    Yes, any electrode can serve as a common reference.


    Linked ear reference is common in some disciplines such as neurofeedback / QEEG. But is not a requirement. Some montages even use no common reference, such as Laplacian or sequential,

    ok, thanks, I know a little about other references montages =)
    Then, if I want to use another reference montage I could use the device without the earclip, It's not necesary to record that data and I could remove the earclip on my device, am I right?

    The earclip is just another type of electrode, you can use any electrode type: cups, flat, foam self adhesive (e.g. on mastoid), dry combs, etc.

    There is the usual caution about taking care mixing different electrode metal types. Some combinations can create a galvanic / battery effect.
