OpenBCI board for recording cortical LFP ?

Hello - I am currently a PhD student interested in using OpenBCI for my project on a preclinical mouse model of epilepsy. For my purposes, I only need to be able to record a decent LFP signal for marking seizures and maybe a bit of spectral analysis. Would the Cyton+Daisy or Ganglion board be able to effectively record intracranial signals from mice to accomplish this? Any suggestions/comments would be super helpful! Thank you!

    Crana, hi.

    Have you looked at OpenEphys and their support for LFP (Local Field Potential) processing? I have doubts that the 250 Hz (Cyton) or 200 Hz (Ganglion) sample rates are going to be sufficient for LFP. As some papers state that LFP contains signals "below 300 Hz". That means that your sample rate should be at least 600 Hz, probably more like 1000 Hz.

    Also some papers show the LFP signal amplitudes may be below 1 microvolt. This is too low to avoid the noise floor in most EEG equipment.

    Thanks for your response. Yes I considered Open Ephys but unfortunately it is out of our budget. Would you happen to know of any other boards that would have sufficient sampling rates and amplification?

    No, I do not.

    Your other consideration is this: look carefully at the Open Ephys equipment. It shows very elaborate SHIELDED cables and connectors, which are a requirement for low noise biosignal acquisition. 99% of EEG equipment you see out there does not need to go to that extreme.

    EEG can work at modest ~ 250 Hz sample rates. Which is commonly found. I believe your LFP equipment is going to be 1K Hz minimum, and possibly going up from there.
