How to keep channels open

Currently, if we keep a channel open/floating, the openBCI software will soon indicate 'railed 100%' and stop reading data. I am wondering if there is a way to keep it floating while still reading the data (to sense noise). Thx!

Just turn the unused channels OFF in the GUI, by clicking the channel number.

There are also shortcut keys in expert mode:

The best approach for "noise sensing" is to look at your active channels that are connected to the subject. Both time series and FFT.

Channels not connected to the subject are subject to environmental noise, which is not an accurate indication of true noise levels.

  • Thanks for the reply! So there is no way to keep the floating channel always open and reading signals? I would like to know the environmental noise to some extent.

It is not recommended. Open channels are NOT a reliable indicator of "environmental noise".

  • yeah i know it is not an ideal way, but just curious if it is possible to do so even if it is a bad attempt.
Also if we "look at your active channels that are connected to the subject. Both time series and FFT." then the original signal will inevitably be influenced (especially if the noise frequency band overlaps with the signal of interest) , right? Thank you!

You must position your equipment AWAY from sources of environmental noise, such as extension cords, power supplies, conduits in wall ceiling floor, LED and CFL light bulbs, wireless gear, etc.

  • Thanks! So the conclusion is there is no way to keep the floating channel always open and reading signals?

Correct. Deal with your noise sources BEFORE you start your experiment, not DURING.
