EEG, brain training, spinal cord injury, virtual reality

Inspired by a research done in Brazil (https://www.nature.com/articles/srep30383) and OpenBCI solutions I’m wondering whether it is possible to build a system based on OpenBCI to control a virtual reality avatar limbs (specifically legs) through EEG - basically the first stage described in the experiment. In the beginning it would be enough to just know whether brain area responsible for a given leg movement is active or not - whether a person is really trying to move a leg, as a biofeedback. I’m currently an incomplete paraplegic, going through rehabilitation, and at the same time I’m an electronic engineer. I think this kind of biofeedback might possibly be very beneficial for my physiotherapy , at least worth trying. But I’m totally new in this field and don’t know where to start. I would greatly appreciate any information, advice, any help on where to begin and in which direction to go.
