Can connect but not stream data from Cyton board

I recently purchased a Cyton board and have been going through the tutorial to try to collect some sample data.

The first few times I plugged it in, I was able to collect a few seconds (maybe 7 seconds in total) of data before the data collection stream froze. Now when I plug it in, I can't get any signal at all. Everything in the System Control Panel works as described in the tutorial. In the Radio Configuration menu, I am able to successfully connect to the device and identify the channel. It's just when I click to start the data stream in the main window that no data appears. Despite this, it says "Data stream started" at the bottom of the screen. No data appears in the live display nor is any saved to the text file.

Here's what I've done so far to test this:
1) Ran through the tutorial and troubleshooting section on the OpenBCI tutorial (http://docs.openbci.com/Tutorials/01-Cyton_Getting%20Started_Guide)
2) Tried starting the system with the Cyton Board in both BLE and PC configurations. Neither worked.
3) Tested this on two different machines - Macbook Pro running macOS Sierra and a Desktop PC running the latest LTS version of Lubuntu.
4) For the Mac, ran the FTDI buffer size fix described in the tutorial here: http://docs.openbci.com/Tutorials/10-Mac_FTDI_Driver_Fix
5) I have shut everything down and brought things up in the correct order
 (e.g. 1 - USB Dongle, 2 - Cyton board, 3 - OpenBCI software) and see the
 same result.

I'm attaching screenshots showing the configurations I am using in System Control Panel and the main system. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Still no luck on fixing this issue.

    I'm trying to update the firmware now, but running in to issues here as well. I've been following the instructions here (http://docs.openbci.com/Hardware/05-Cyton_Board_Programming_Tutorial#cyton-board-programming-tutorial-firmware-versions-2xx-3xx-fall-2016-present) to update to the latest DefaultBoard.ino file.

    Everything works fine in the tutorial, including putting the Cyton board into Bootloaded Mode (blue light blinks), up until I click upload. At this point, I receive the error message "No target found." And I have set the USB dongle to GPIO 6.

    One thing to note is that I couldn't find the option /dev/tty.usbserial-DN00nnnn  in the serial list, so instead I am using the /dev/cu.* equivalent. (Also, interestingly, I tried repeating the upload process while selecting a random serial port with the USB dongle unpluged, and it generated the same message.)

    I feel like I've run out of things to try, so I could use some help with this.

    Thanks

    Another update:

    (1) I tried running from the command line and no luck:

    $ ./pic32prog/v2.1.24/pic32prog -d /dev/tty.usbserial-DO00BLEV -b 115200 /var/folders/kj/1vv3kb595lb2bkk2s4f27qx40000gn/T/arduino_build_332800/DefaultBoard.ino.hex
    Programmer for Microchip PIC32 microcontrollers, Version 2.1.24
        Copyright: (C) 2011-2015 Serge Vakulenko

    No target found.

    Similarly, I can't read any data:

    $ ./pic32prog/v2.1.24/pic32prog -d /dev/tty.usbserial-DO00BLEV -b 115200 -r ~/file.bin 0 10
    Programmer for Microchip PIC32 microcontrollers, Version 2.1.24
        Copyright: (C) 2011-2015 Serge Vakulenko
           Memory: total 10 bytes

    No target found.

    The RXD light does blink on the board when I run these commands, however.

    Could this have anything to do with the fact that I have the Cyton Daisy Chain hardware (16 channels) but am testing this without the daisy chain module plugged in? I didn't think it would matter, so I have been leaving it unplugged for ease of access to the PROG / RESET buttons.

    Thank you!

  • It should not matter if you are daisy chained or not!

    I have a feeling you are seeing the "No target found" because your serial port is open in the GUI or another program and preventing the pic32prog from being able to get the lock on the serial port. Be sure no GUI is open when you try to upload firmware.

    This seems like everything should be working if you are able to see the system is up in the GUI though. Are you able to hit start streaming again and the data start back up?

    Can you try using an older GUI? http://openbci.com/index.php/software like version v2.2.1?
