Using LSL to *send* markers to OpenBCI GUI

A few other portable EEG systems I'm familiar with (e.g. ANT-Neuro, and enobio) allow you to insert synchronised markers into the EEG timecourse via the recording software, and using LSL.
As far as I understand from reading the docs and discussions here, OpenBCI GUI doesn't support that yet. I'm kind of curious why, but if that functionality is not built-in already, how would we go about adding it?
