July Newsletter

Greetings OpenBCI community! We’re bringing you exciting updates for the end of July!

Recently two new products were added to our store—the low-cost EEG headband compatible with all OpenBCI boards, and EEG dry electrodes compatible with the Headband AND our Ultracortex Mark IV Headset. They serve as great replacements for original electrodes that have degraded over time. See the exclusive discount code below in section 1!

Just hours ago, we released the first beta for GUI v3.4.0, with brand-new features for all OpenBCI Boards. Changes include the ability to save/load your favorite GUI settings via dropdown menu or keyboard shortcut, auto-load settings when system starts, auto-save settings when system stops, and new BLED112 support for windows and linux! More information below in section 3!

We work hard to provide a biosensing platform for everyone, whether an experienced BCI hacker, researcher, or EEG/EMG/ECG beginner, to visualize and analyze their brain waves and mental states! Follow us on Twitter to see the latest developments in the BCI community!

In the OpenBCI Docs Section, we added a tutorial to show how the new OpenBCI Headband goes together with our boards for acquisition and visualization of EEG data!

3. Community Member of the Month

This month we are giving a shout-out to Richard Waltman, who has been writing lines upon lines of GUI code to add brand-new features, including the ability to save/load your favorite GUI settings via dropdown menu or keyboard shortcut! We hope these changes will decrease set-up time for everyone. He’s made a fantastic contribution to BCI software and we’d like to commend him!

Why Richard gets the OpenBCI cool badge?:

We’re highlighting the improvements he helped add to the GUI, including but not limited to:

  • Pulse streaming added to Networking
  • Added fourth stream to OSC mode
  • Added plist file to add settings for information when app is built
  • Add BLED112 support for windows and linux
  • Save/Load default and user settings for all data modes independently
  • Fixed Ganglion-GUI experience on startup when loading settings
  • Error catch: allow ~ 4 seconds to apply channel settings to Cyton when loading
  • Fixed issue where convert from SD card could cause crash #351
  • Fixed issue with accel and playback file.
  • Fix activate/deactivate channels for Ganglion when loading settings
  • Further cleanup of error messages on system start
  • Make Channel On/Off buttons more readable with white text #361
  • Fixed bug where app crashed on Ganglion load

Working closely with AJ, our resident dev and all-around rockstar, Richard has done a terrific job! We hope this inspires you to download the GUI and help us test the new beta release! Check out lots of other applications of OpenBCI, from research to performance art to fun experiments, on our community page!
