From Mind to Music, Medical Head-Wearable for Music Therapy and Neuro-Rehabilitation

We are a team of six engineering students from the University of Utah, representing disciplines such as Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical, Chemical, and Computer Science. Through the Bench to Bedside program, we are excited to bring innovation to Music Therapy and Neuro-Rehabilitation with our novel device concept.

Our goal is to develop a wearable device that uses EEG electrodes and machine learning algorithms to produce MIDI notes. As a proof of concept, we aim to create a system capable of generating a single major scale, with future potential for expanded musical capabilities.

To develop our initial prototypes, we are grateful for the support of OpenBCI, who have generously provided a Ganglion Board and EEG electrodes. These tools will enable us to design a device that can serve both recreational and therapeutic purposes. We believe this project could represent the next step in music creation, with applications extending beyond the medical field.

We extend our gratitude to the University of Utah and the Bench to Bedside program for this opportunity. Special thanks to Dr. Swomitra Mohanty and Mr. Jacob Sheffield for their invaluable guidance throughout the process.
