I downloaded OpenBCI GUI on my Apple M1, but I cannot open it. My Apple tells me that the software needs to be updated. Did anybody else face this problem before?

    Hi Esther,

The GUI should work on the the Apple M* series computers. Can you show what error message you are receiving?

    William

  • Hi William,
The message is in German: "OpenBCI_GUI“ kann nicht geöffnet werden, da Apple darin nicht nach Schadsoftware suchen kann.". It says that Apple cannot look for malware in the software, so it cannot open "OpenBCI_GUI". Then comes the part that the software needs to be updated and that I should contact the developers for more information.
    All the best,
    Esther

Have you tried this: using the Finder in the appropriate folder window, hold down the 'Control' key of your Mac keyboard (lower left corner), then simultaneously click on the OpenBCI_GUI application program that you are trying to run. A menu will pop up with choices. Select 'Open'. (If you happen to have a three button mouse, you can also get this menu with a right-click on the GUI file name.)

If a dialog box then appears complaining about something, agree to open the app regardless of its mistaken suspicion of malware. There is no malware in the OpenBCI apps. After you have done this once, it will no longer complain.

Mentioning Richard @retiutut, have you seen any such malware warnings on Apple M1 M2 OpenBCI_GUI requests to run the app?

  • Hi William,
No, I only double clicked it, and when I then said it should open the software because I trusted it, it did not work. With Control it worked. Thanks a lot!

Richard @retiutut, Esther is now fine using the control-click / menu / Open technique.

Are the M1 apps properly signed by us so Apple trusts them? How else would her malware warning be triggered? Could it be extra anti-virus software she has installed? But her message says it is from Apple, no mention of virus suite.

    William
