data on SD card corrupt?

Hi all
I've been trying to capture the 8 bit as well as 16 bit data from my openBCI Cyton/cyton+daisy.

Streaming the data works, flawlessly, using:

  • Brainflow (with serial command to start recording on SD)
  • as well as the OpenBCI_GUI v5. Cyton board is V3
Yet saving to SD card gives a file which doesn't seem right to me.

On the SD card I find, as expected, a file such as OBCI_FB.txt in attach.

Yet when I try to load this in the OpenBCI Gui via playback, I get the message "ERROR: tried to load an unsupported file for playback, please try a valid file."

SD files created with serial command or OpenBCI GUI are the same issue.

I've attached my text file (was for 5min recording), different time settings result in same error message...

SD card is formatted in FAT32, large enough, and is good brand (Sandisk Ultra A1).

Could this be a firmware issue or am I understanding something wrong?

Thanks for the help!

When did you purchase this Cyton? Has it ever worked correctly? The SD card file you attached is corrupted with many garbage characters. I suggest you email customer support at contact at openbci.com.

It's possible that your board or firmware is malfunctioning.

Addendum: there are MANY fake name brand SD cards being sold online.

So actually the first thing to check would be some write / read tests to see if the card is reliable. Even better would be to get a card you know works in other situations, and is high speed. The garbaging you are seeing could be that this card you are using is marginal, and not capable of operating at the required speed / timing.

  • Hi @wjcroft
    thanks for the reply!
the card is fine, I bought it in local, reliable store over here (FNAC, big company) and was using it before on my raspberry pi 4.
I'll contact the customer support in any case, strange thing is that streaming is functioning correctly, so it'b be weird if the firmware is partially working (never seen that behavior before in any case...)

It's possible the SD card reader/writer hardware is glitched.

  • Apparently the fault was that a 64G SD card, which the openbci can't handle. I was told the documentation will be adapted.

  • Hi everone! I'm having the same problem here, but I'm using a 16GB SDHC class 10 micro sd.
When I open the .txt file saved on micro SD, a corrupt file is opened. How can I do?
    Awaiting replies, thanks in advance.

Giordana, did you read some of the previous comments? There are many clone / fake sd cards being sold in online venues. First suggestion would be to try different known-good cards that work in other circumstances.

I see that you are in Italy. A reliable source of sd cards, is generally an electronics distributor that gets shipment directly from the manufacturer. This is not the same as a 'retailer' or online seller, which cannot be trusted. Mouser is one such distributor in your area. But they have many offices worldwide.

Yes, I have read the previous comments and yes, I have ordered from a reliable online site, that is RS electronics. So I don't think that is the problem.

I suggest you email to (contact at openbci.com) to get in touch with customer support. They should be able to suggest further tests. I still recommend trying other cards for comparison. Are you able to write and read back from the card, successfully, using your laptop?
