win10 - GUI v.5.0.9 freeze ? [resolved]

etcetc Italy
edited November 2021 in OpenBCI_GUI

Sorry for my bad English!
I didn’t work for some months with Openbci. Now:
1) I got a new pc with win10 20 days ago (the last pc worked with win7);
2) I installed on this PC the OPENBCI GUI 5.0.9 2021-11-06;
3) I installed the FTDI driver;
4) I started the GUI, I inserted the Dongle (on GPIO_6), I turned on my Cyton V3-32 (on PC) , I tried to connect GUI to Cyton in “manual” (I pushed the only one COM “cytonCOM5”) , but the connection failed (I closed after 60 seconds of “Starting session”;
5) I closed everything, and I retried. The connection was OK!!! I worked for about 10 minutes and I was happy because the new GUI was better than older version (but I saw that there is not the Ohm icons for the impedance!); then I closed everything;
6) The day after I tried to restart all (GUI, dongle, Cyton), but I didn’t connect (see point 4); I tried for 6-7 times; I changed the batteries of the Cyton. Nothing! I tried also in AUTO-CONNECT: nothing!
7) I downloaded the old version 4.2; the connect was ok! (in 4.2 I saw again the Ohm icons for the impedance … ).

Do you think something about my problem? What can I do to work with the new version 5.0.9?
Thank you!
ps I think that if GUI indicates as COM "cytonCOM5", the GUI can see the Cyton.

    Hi Etc,

    I noted your start-up sequence stated, "...I started the GUI, I inserted the Dongle...". Have you tried reversing those two, so you have the dongle already inserted BEFORE you start the GUI? Possible this may give the GUI a better idea of the dongle port situation. I'm also not clear why you need to use the 'manual' location mode, instead of letting the GUI find the port for you.

    Mentioning Richard @retiutut.

  • Thank you William!
    Two minuets ago I tried so:
    I inserted the dongle, then I started the GUI and then I put on Cyton. I used the "auto-connect". Same result, as you can see in the attacched picture.
    Then I tried:
    I inserted the dongle, I put on the Cyton and the I started the GUI and I used "auto-connect": same result!
    Than you!

    Can you look in your Documents/OpenBCI/Console_Data/ folder, and paste the console log corresponding to the stalled 'Starting Session' above?

    Also, what COM port devices are on this machine? Do you have any other usb serial port devices? You can access Windows Device Manager:

    https://www.google.com/search?q=find+com+ports+in+device+manager

    What are COM1, 3, and 4? Are those your devices? Can you remove them and test the GUI again? Perhaps reboot after removing.

  • Also without COM1, COM3 and COM4 GUI doesn't connect!
    Thank you!

    Richard @retiutut, any suggestions?

    Etc, here is another thing you can try, running the GUI from the Processing IDE,

    https://docs.openbci.com/Software/OpenBCISoftware/GUIDocs/#running-the-openbci-gui-from-the-processing-ide

    Processing will also display a Console log window as the GUI is running. Can you confirm that your Cyton operated normally with the previous laptop? Can you try a test with that old setup? Just to confirm your hardware is solid.

  • Thank you, William!
    I am working and I worked on PC, not laptop. The old one was on win7. The new on win10.
    I remember that GUI 4.2.2 works on the new PC!
    The new GUI version doesn't run in win7.
    But I have a news for you!!! I used the my wife's laptop: it is on win 10. Also on this computer I have the same problem!!!!
    Perhaps the italian air?
    Thank you!
    I'll try to run the GUI from the IDE (if I will be able to...)

  • I gave a look to OpenBCI_GUI/Console_Data and I saw that there are a lot of data-set "Console+datastamp". But there is only one data-set with name Brainflow + timestamp, "Documents\OpenBCI_GUI\Console_Data\Brainflow_2021-11-08_12-58-44.txt". I think that this one was written the only one time that GUI worked. I don't know what is Brainflow, I dont' know if it is useful to understand my problem. But this the text.
    Thank you.

  • A good news!!! I understood the problem! Eureka! But then I have 2 questions...
    When I download openbci Gui from your web-site, the download goes on folder Download; Winrar-unzip gives 2 possibilities: unzip on Download or unzip on another folder. If I choose another folder (C:\programs) the GUI doesn't work. If I let Download, GUI works!!!
    Perhaps does GUI work with Brainflow Java only if it is on Dowload? It is strange... .
    The 2 questions:
    1) how can I do the impedance test with the version 5.0.9? I don't see the Ohm icon to click;
    2) what can I do, if possible, to work with GUI in the folder Program? It is not important, I can launch GUI from downloan.
    Thank you!!!
    Ettore

    GUI 5.0.9 now has the Cyton Signal Check Widget. This makes it so that we can properly check impedance on one channel at a time, and the ability to check all channels automatically (one by one, of course).

  • Thank you!
    Sorry, but I didn't understand:
    1) Openbci_GUI can run only if it is in the folder Download? Do you confirm?
    2) I dont'see anything in GUI screen that can be a measuerements of impedance (ohm). In the picture that I attached, where would I get the impedance, one channel for time? What can I do to start the measurements?
    Thank you and sorry for my English and for my stupid questions!!!
    Etc

    GUI v5 does not run on Windows 7, as BrainFlow does not support it. Microsoft also does not support Windows 7 anymore.

    All Windows 7 users should update to Windows 8 or 10 for security reasons, and also to use GUI v5.

    Openbci_GUI can run only if it is in the folder Download? Do you confirm?

    • This is something with permissions on your computer and Windows. There is nothing we can do to resolve this. You are free to move the program wherever you wish and "Run as Administrator".

    In the picture that I attached, where would I get the impedance, one channel for time? What can I do to start the measurements?

    • There are dropdowns where you see "Time Series", "FFT", and "Accelerometer", and you can select the Cyton Signal widget.

    Thank you very much!
    Ok! You are saying that Openvibe_GUI can run only with the administrator permission. I didn't know this information, thank you, now I'll controll!
    If I can give a little advice for the benefit of all the users, it would be an useful thing to write the instructions to get impedance measurements in the documentation with some more and NEW informations. The documentation is written for version 4 ( with the old icon).
    ps I know well that GUI v.5 doesn't work on win.7. I said to you that I am working on a pc with win 10 and so I can use GUI v.5. In win 7 it would be impossible!

    Yes! This will be done this week. :smile:
