Calculating mental engagement index

Hello,
I would like to create an application using an EEG and calculate user's engagement.
I have found some papers about mental engagement index:

It is actually the following ratio : Beta / (Alpha + Theta).

I have no idea how to create such algorithm but I will be able, at some point. My question is: does this method needs any training / labelling phase? I suppose not but I would really like an extra opinion on this.

    Nevermind, I am now sure it does not need any training labels. It is calculated from PSD etc.

    Yes, that is correct, it is using band power ratios.
