        <description><![CDATA[<p>Hi, i am a meditation practitioner who got interested in looking at the result of various meditation practice (like normal mindfulness vs jhana or absorption meditation) on EG and seeing how sharp and sustained the variation of pattern following shift in state of consciousness can be.</p>

<p>So while not looking for very high refresh rate or whatever but more long term average....i still found even the basic muse headband give some quite decent result.  my main goals is look at alternating variation of ACS trough volition control effect over a timeframe.</p>

<p>For exemple, here is a session where i hover, with eye open, betwen trying to get intro deeper and softer meditation pattern tryign to see at how fast and sustain the variation in alpha brand is....and then about midway stich to much more beta/gamma dominant high single point focus practice.</p>

<p>My main concern is that, especially for the more active focus...the sheer intensity of focus used make it VERY hard to not get any kind of muscle effect but i did try my best in the various test of "subtain gamma" to get it as stable with the least indication of muscle movement as i could...still tricky especially with the easy to disturb muse headband low sensor count.</p>

<p>Also, i curently have very limited analysis forstware only using quite generic graph.....curious about recomendation for potential hardware upgrade. what could help having a better quality signal and test environement and sujestion for better analytic tool. if anyone want to use they softweare to look at tsome CVS files and give insight that would be apreciated.</p>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>Would anyone happen to know how to configure the demo design so that the generic single channel board element is replaced with the ganglion element? I have already tried inputting the correct element into the design but weirdly it doesnt work whereas other non-eegboard elements can be edited in. Eg, "insert element  -&gt; source -&gt; amplifier -&gt; ganglion" does not insert anything, yet "insert element" -&gt; source -&gt; signal-generator" does insert.</p>

<p>Inserting the correct amplifier element is I think all I need to do in order to get the demos to run properly with my ganglion, so it is an oddly particular roadblock i am trying to get by here.</p>

I'm an engineer who has been working on an ADS1299-based EEG device that loosely references the OpenBCI Cyton board -- many of the similarities between the two boards are in the bias filter network and channel filter networks. I've gotten it to stream across USB and Bluetooth, and I generally get clean EEG signals both ways.</p>

<p>However, something I haven't been able to fix yet has to do with noise. While a patient is testing with the EEG cap, if someone else walks around them -- even up to 6ft away -- huge noise spikes will be introduced into the data. This happens both when the design is used on a wired connection or when it is streaming wirelessly. My guess is that this is because of large static potential differences between the patient and the person walking around them, but I'm not entirely sure. I will be doing some testing in different rooms around the office to see if it's related to the floor material, it's possible the carpet here is what's creating so much static electricity.</p>

<p>Have any of you experienced this with the OpenBCI boards, and if so, how did you mitigate it?</p>

<li>Uses a ADS1299 for data conversion</li>
<li>Uses the bias amplifier sourced from all N channels</li>
<li>Uses the SRB2 reference electrode internally connected to all P side channels.</li>
<li>Uses a linked ear referential montage with the bias electrode on a mastoid.</li>
<li>Electrode wires are kept to a short length, but are unshielded.</li>
<li>Electrodes are dry comb electrodes.</li>
</ul>

Now I meet some problem.&nbsp;</div><div>&nbsp; &nbsp;The system is configured in Daisy-Chain Mode. The 3 ADS1299 share the same CS, CLK, SCLK,DIN,START, PWDN and POWER pin. The DOUT of first ADS1299 is connected to the STM32, the DOUT of second ADS1299 is connected to the Daisy-In of first ADS1299, the third DOUT is connected to the second Daisy-In. The Daisiy-IN of the third ADS1299 is connected to the GND. The first DRDY is connected to the STM32 and the other two are not connected to any pin.         <description><![CDATA[<p>Hi. I am a ph.D. student and am currently using Bitalino (r)evolution board to collect EMG, ECG, and EDA data from participants in a VR HMD experiment. The data is being collected simultaneously using a lab streaming recorder and saved in xdf format.</p>

<p>After completing a pilot test and converting the data to CSV for inspection, I noticed that some participants' EMG, EDA, and ECG data were being recorded as negative decimals. I am curious about the possible reasons for this phenomenon and would appreciate any information you can provide.</p>

<p>I am a guy from Spain, new to EEG systems and I am thinking about buying the neuroptimal® neurofeedback system. I have heard that it is a very reliable system and better than linear EEG systems.</p>

<p>On the other hand, I have read that not everyone finds it effective.<br />
Is it possible for it to work and then not? Let me explain: A subject receives a number of sessions like 25. And after two years, he returns to the sessions and they have no effect. It's possible?<br />
Would you recommend that system over the linear one?<br />
Can anyone who has used it give me feedback?</p>

<p>I am a nervous, impulsive, absent-minded person, I think about things, maybe ADD. That's why I think it's the right system for me.</p>

I'm measuring impedances using the Cyton Signal widget in the GUI.<br />
However, when no pin is connected I am getting non-sensical impedance values around 3 kOhms.<br />
I read that they are supposed to be as high as 5000 kOhms in open circuit (<a href="https://openbci.com/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/3726/electrode-impedance-test-using-the-gui-widget" rel="nofollow">https://openbci.com/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/3726/electrode-impedance-test-using-the-gui-widget</a>).<br />
As for the hardware, I am using a third party pre-built solution containing a cyton, a daisy, a wifi shield and a battery board. <br />
Can anybody help explain this behaviour? My main problem is that I can't get anything more than noise with both passive and active EEG electrodes. So I'm in the process of outruling internal problems with the hardware.</p>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>I am currently working on a scientific experiment that involves the Star Wars Force Trainer II. It has three dry metal electrodes; one active electrode on the forehead, and two reference electrodes that go behind the ears (feel like I remember reading this somewhere but not sure if it's true).</p>

<p>The experiment involves 4 actions: resting (eyes open), eyes closed, reading, and rhythmic tapping. Interestingly, there was significant change from rest (t test) in alpha and theta (for alpha, only eyes closed and tapping), but not for beta or gamma.</p>

<p>This is kind of counter intuitive since:</p>

<ul>
<li>From my research on the anterior-posterior gradient, it seems like higher frequency waves should be more towards the forehead, which is where the primary electrode is Reading from print (according to previous studies) is associated with increases in beta and gamma waves; so why wasn’t there a measured increase?</li>
<li>A previous study also found cross scalp changes in delta, theta, alpha, and beta in eyes closed, but I only found changes in theta and alpha.</li>
</ul>

<p>Is there any reason for this? Perhaps a principle that I'm missing?</p>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>I want to get the best of both worlds. To do this, I need to understand interoperability between opensource and closed source software. This means questions such as:<br />
1) Can I run Emotiv software on OpenBCI hardware?<br />
2) Can I run software typically used with OpenBCI on Emotiv? <br />
3) How useful are the commercial, but more gamified interfaces in general? Would you say they're crucial for holding ADHD attention?<br />
4) I'm reading a lot of papers on EEG plots. Brainbay seems to be more familiar. Might OpenBCI be a more familiar platform to relate to given this literature background? Or is it worth paying a bit more for more commercial support<br />
5) What can I NOT do with OpenBCI hardware that is significant? <br />
6) What can I NOT do with closed hardware? (discontinued support? poor repairability etc?)<br />
I currently run MacOS. I switched to this after years of linux. While it has a lot of annoyances, I like that I can run linux-like CLI programs via projects such as Brew and get many of the benefits of open source, while at the same time having support for proprietary software if I really need it. This is the approach I want to establish with my BCI hardware purchase.</p>

<p>I have just received my 16-channel board today, what I believe to be equivalent to a Cyton + Daisy + Wifi shield (I got it second-hand, and it's an unofficial (<a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284876280716">although common</a>) board, so the layout is just a little different). The board comes without a dongle; so connecting via Wifi is the only way I have to communicate with it.</p>

<p>So far I have managed to follow the WiFi setup instructions perfectly fine. The shield firmware is on 2.0.5 (the latest GH release). I'm not sure how I could find out the Cyton's firmware.</p>

<p>I am new to this, so may not fully know what I am doing. I was trying to set up the basics and just get a signal, but I had some problems with extremely noisy signals, then not receiving a signal at all, and having all the inputs railed. It's not completely clear to me what railing actually means, but I am assuming the DC bias is measured as being too high, and the amplifier comes in at some point and attenuates the signal or something like that. I've also failed to find a complete explanation of how the different groundings work/should be connected up (AGND, bias, SRB).</p>

<p>However whilst I was fiddling away, I noticed that there is a packet loss indication in the status bar of the GUI, and figured it would make sense to get to the bottom of this first. The GUI widget reports over 99% loss - which seems would be good enough reason to me for seeing all sorts of weirdness in the trace itself.</p>

<p>I am a bit suspicious, as the packet loss is always 99.22%. It doesn't deviate from this by more than 0.05% - I've tried a few different way to relieve this but none has resulted in any improvement whatsoever.</p>

<p>Variables I have tried changing:</p>

<ul>
<li>WiFi Direct vs using my existing Router (both AC/N and G bands on separate SSIDs)</li>
<li>Taking the device outside away from noise in the building (so WiFi Direct)</li>
<li>Low battery apparently can cause noise; I have tried charging. It hasn't yet reached full charge, but filling it for an hour or two hasn't seemed to make any change.</li>
<li>I don't see an option in the 5.1.0 GUI to choose between TCP and UDP. I presume it's been removed in favour of always using UDPx3, but this would be an obvious thing to try if it can be changed.</li>
<li>Sample Rate</li>
</ul>

<p>I also have seen some artefacts (with no cables connected) on the trace - I believe these are the cyclical noise pattern that others have mentioned. However, I'm not completely sure I can say this is what I was seeing.</p>

<p>Could anyone provide any recommendations as to what I could do to diagnose this please?</p>

<p>I am currently using a library that sets the Teensy 4.0 as slave to communicate via SPI with an openBCI.  I would like to add to this board a teensy so I can add more features to the board. Currently I am trying to send the date to the openBCI just to test the implementation.</p>

<p>Before working with the OpenBCI, I tested the slave code with another teensy that serves as a master. They both worked properly, I sent a command with the teensy#1 (Master), then the teensy #2 (slave) calculated the date and sent it to the master.</p>

<p>When I do the same with the pic32 the data stream from the pic32 gets corrupted only when I connect the MISO to the board. While I was looking at the gui, the data stopped sending, as soon as I disconnect the MISO, the GUI keeps ploting the signals. When I connect the CS, the SCK and the MOSI while checking with the oscilloscope, the MISO sends the data correctly from the teensy (slave) to the oscilloscope. At the moment I connect the MISO to the pic, the pin voltage changes completely (both devices use a 3.3V architecture).</p>

<p>I tried only connecting the MISO to the Pic and the same problem happened. Maybe if someone knows about this problem or something similar. Maybe the voltages are not the same in both ports and are generating a type of shortcircuit.</p>

MUSE offers an SDK, but because we are working with a heterogenous assortment of devices, we'd like a uniform software platform on top of which to build an analytics pipeline. Is it possible to take MUSE data into the OpenBCI GUI and the Brainflow software? I've seen an open source MUSE-LSL package (<a href="https://github.com/alexandrebarachant/muse-lsl" rel="nofollow">https://github.com/alexandrebarachant/muse-lsl</a>) so it seems possible to go MUSE -&gt; LSL -&gt; OpenBCI + Brainflow, but not entirely sure.         <description><![CDATA[<p>I built a HAL-4 EEG from a kit in 1989. It was a complicated build that required a lot of soldering, but it worked great. The only issue I had with it was that it was very sensitive to muscle twitching, so you had to sit very still while using it to get good data. I haven't used it in more than 20 years. I'm thinking about trying to revive it. I still have the Technical Manual , and printouts of the software source code that I wrote to use it with an Apple Macintosh. Does anyone else have experience with the HAL-4? Does anyone have any advice on reviving it? Is there any chance of making it compatible with OpenBCI software?<br />

I was wondering if anybody had thoughts about www.Biosignal.Network. This is a Chrome based web app that does neurofeedback signal processing - free for trainers and trainees. Currently it only supports the Pocket Neurobics Wiz line of amplifiers, but I'm not really clear on the relationship b/w Biosignal and Pocket Neurobics - the only reference to it is on the PN website so I guess it's not necessarily an open source development. <br />
With regard to the site itself - at first glance the interface seems a bit tricky to use and I don't have a PN device to try it properly. But it is an interesting development in that it works on Mac, Windows and Android.  There are no other options for the Mac with regard to Pocket Neurobics and indeed few Mac options in general in NFB. Also no driver required for the Mac. <br />
Is this the only purely web-based option for NFB? I assumed that this was a technical limitation of NFB signal processing but apparently not. I wonder what would be involved in creating a similar web app for the Ganglion. <br />

<p>First of all, I would like to inform the reason for my question: the intention is to use ADS1299-4, which has 4 channels. So, what I want to understand is whether any changes to the firmware are really necessary to use it.</p>

<p>In the OpenBCI_32bit_Library.h library, there is the updateBoardData (boolean downsample) function, which, as I understand it, is responsible for requesting the reading of data from the ADS channels.<br />
Part of the function:</p>

<p>So, what I would like to know is what ADS responds to when we send this command <code>inByte = xfer (0x00);</code><br />
Since the intention is to leave the number of default channels, such as 8 channels, knowing if using the 4-channel ADS would not cause problems. But I would only have this security if I knew what this function xfer (0x00) does to ADS even after having finished its number of channels.</p>

<p>If I could sum up the question, it would be:<br />
Would sending this xfer (0x00) command to ADS within the <em>for</em> with more channels than ADS actually has, cause problems? What does ADS respond by sending xfer (0x00) more times than its number of channels?</p>

It's a lot cheaper than any others available, and I guess it can be repositioned to measure from where-ever you'd like. I don't think the hardware is open, but the SDK is.</p>

        <description><![CDATA[<p>Hi all,&nbsp;</p><p>I am new to this forum, but have been reading for a while and working on a custom EEG Board, basically based on the Ganglion Board but without the simblee chip and an ESP32 instead.</p>
<p>I also ported the Firmware of the Ganglion Board so it works on the ESP32, yet I do not want to use BLE for data transmission but a wired connection instead, since my use case requires a stable connection in noisy (wifi and cell phone packed) areas, like a trade fair.</p><p><br /></p>
<p>For simplicity I prefer serial over USB (a USB Isolator will be used for security reasons of course).</p>
<p><br /></p>
<p>Now my question is basically how, if at all, can a custom board be used with the OpenBCI GUI via serial connection?</p>
<p>The GUI only Shows a selection of two boards for Live Data: Ganglion and Cyton. How can I add a custom board?</p>
<p><br /></p><p>Even though I basically use the same firmware from the Ganglion with the same commands (e.g. b to start the data stream, 1-4 to deactivate channels, z for impedance test etc.) obviously the Open BCI GUI would expect a Ganglion board to be connected via BLE or with the Wifi Shield.</p>
<p><br /></p>
<p>Is there any easy way to extend OpenBCI GUI to accept also other, custom boards?</p>
<p>Or am I looking in the wrong place and actually I need to create my own version of the Open BCI Hub?&nbsp;</p><p>But then again, how would I add a custom board to show up in the OpenBCI GUI?</p>
